Leidarendi is located about a 30-minute drive from Reykjavik, near the Blue Mountains in Southwest Iceland. There is a 150-meter walk to the cave entrance. Your guide will provide a helmet and headlight for exploring the stunning lava formations and colors within Leidarendi cave. Prepare for the cold air inside and dress accordingly, as you’ll spend about an hour navigating through the cave. Some hunching and crawling are required, but the cave is mostly accessible.

This 900-meter long, pitch-black lava tube is a circular showcase of stalactites, stalagmites, and unexpected vibrant colors from lava formations. A lava tube is a result of volcanic eruptions, formed when the surface lava hardens, leaving flowing magma beneath. After the lava flow stops and the rocks cool, a long, empty cave takes shape – this geological marvel is referred to as a lava tube.

Less frequented than other lava tubes, the unique structural features of Leidarendi draw fewer visitors. Walking paths lack sturdy wooden platforms, hence reliable hiking boots are needed. The cave offers optional areas for crawling, for those seeking an adventure. However, easier routes can also be taken to reach the same destination, logically resembling a loose figure of 8.
