Highlights
  • Devils Tower National Monument - Devils Tower sits across the state line in northeast Wyoming. The Tower is a solitary, stump-shaped granite formation that looms 1,267 feet above the tree-lined Belle Fourche River Valley. Once hidden below the earth’s surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing the Tower.

The two-square-mile park surrounding the tower was proclaimed the nation’s first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. The park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. While visiting the park you are bound to see deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife. The mountain’s markings are the basis for Native American legend. One legend has it that a giant bear clawed the grooves into the mountainside while chasing several young Indian maidens. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians. Devils Tower is also remembered as the movie location for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

1st Destination - Devils Tower National Monument established in 1906 as the first National Monument. The region surrounding Devils Tower has strong historical ties with many tribes from the Great Plains and Black Hills. Tribal narratives and historical recounts proclaim the Tower as a revered site - used for winter encampments, spiritual retreats and summer rituals.

The tour is designed such that you’ll get ample time to explore each spot. There are numerous opportunities for capturing beautiful moments and numerous restroom breaks spaced evenly throughout the day.

Awesome tour - My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Devil's Tower and Deadwood with Joe and Julie. We were picked up at our hotel promptly at the appointed time in a very comfortable and clean van. The weather was awesome and we were allowed plenty of time to see and do whatever we desired at each stop of the tour. We highly recommend Black Hills Open Top Tours!

Scenic Beauty and Amazing Experience - My wife and I along with another couple with whom we're friends booked a private tour of Devils Tower. From start to finish Joe, our tour guide, was outstanding, as was the late model minivan in which we were escorted. We visited the National Park where the tower stands, the iconic Aladdin General Store, Bear Butte State Park, Belle Fourche, and Sturgis. We had lunch at the Red Rock Cafe, and Joe kept us entertained with historical facts and details, as well as native American lore. The tour began promptly and ran on schedule. We couldn't have enjoyed a better day!

A Great Tour But Even Better Customer Service! - We booked a private tour to Devil's Tour. Responses were very prompt and booking was easy. I had a number of communications about the itinerary with Rich and in the end this led to some mutual confusion that could have been disastrous. Our guide, Jay, picked us up at the hotel and we set off to the Vore Buffalo Jump. After viewing this interesting site, I reminded Jay that we had to be back to the hotel by 4:00 for another event and asked when he thought we would be at Devil's Tower. His surprise at my question was followed by my shock when he said that Devil's Tower wasn't on our itinerary. To make a long discussion short, all the back and forth on the itinerary had led to some confusion. It was no one's fault, just a misunderstanding on everyone's part. Jay was an experienced guide but it was his first day on the job with this company. To his immense credit, after a 10 minute discussion, he had crafted a revised itinerary and we set-off for Devil's Tower. I was able to offset any costs by using my National Parks Pass for admission. My wife and I had a great tour, seeing everything we wanted to see, and arrived back at the hotel right on time. Sometimes things don't go as planned. Jay showed great instincts in immediately fixing a potentially disastrous customer service problem and Rich, the owner, also showed great customer service by allowing Jay to do the right thing. These are the people that you want to use for tours in the Black Hills...no doubt.

What a place - Devils Tower in Wyoming is an experience within itself. The drive from Deadwood is about an hour with beautiful scenery. Two walking trails are there each taking about an hour. The paved trail is easy but the rocky one is for someone who knows how to walk on trails with rocks. The visitor center is informative and there is a restaurant and gift shop upon entrance to the monument. The America the Beautiful park pass can be used to enter. Deadwood is a town with history, gaming and various things to do. The Moriah Cemetery is a hike up a hill so better to have a car than walk. Walking is permitted around the paths in the cemetery where Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane are buried. Adams House is informative. There is a Brothel that can be toured and a show in the square every day with reenactment of the old days of the west. Ghost Tours are also available. The only disappointment was the numerous T-Shirt and novelty shops. Was almost like the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
