- Government Cocoon (Silk) Market, Ramanagara - The journey will take us to Ramnagaram, a quaint town situated 50 kilometers from Bangalore. In 1780, Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, was gifted silk by an ambassador from the Qing dynasty in China. Enchanted by this exquisite fabric, Tipu dispatched emissaries to Bengal and China to learn more, eventually establishing 22 silk breeding stations, sparking the Mysore Silk revolution. Today, Ramnagaram is renowned for its silk industry, receiving 50 tons of silk cocoons daily, making it Asia’s largest silk cocoon market. A visit to the Government Silk Cocoon Market may even include witnessing an auction if fortunate!
- KSIC Silk Factory and Showroom - The next significant boost for Mysore Silk occurred in 1912 when Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV acquired 32 power looms from Switzerland and founded the Mysore Silk Weaving factory. Over the years, the factory not only clothed the royal family but also produced parachutes for the British army during World War II! The factory remains operational today, offering a fascinating experience to observe the silk production process from cocoon reeling to silk fabric weaving.
The factory showroom showcases an impressive collection of Silk Sarees, the finished product from the Mysore Silk Weaving factory. Silk Sarees are a cultural emblem in South India, ranging from 6-9 yards in length, and are worn by women during auspicious occasions such as weddings or birthdays.
- Mysuru Palace - The magnificent Mysore Palace is our next stop. We will journey back to the golden era of Mysore Maharajas to envision the splendor that was Mysore, embodied by this marvel built in the Indo-Saracenic style, blending Hindu, Muslim, Rajput, and Gothic architectural styles. The Palace is a three-storied stone structure, featuring marble domes and a 145-foot five-storied tower.
- M D TOUSEEF VEGETABLES - Continuing our tour of Mysore, we will visit Devraja Market, the charming old bazaar of Mysore. It is a sensory delight filled with flowers, vegetables, fruits, jaggery, onions and potatoes, puffed rice, and coconuts!
