- Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania - Renowned as one of Quito’s most illustrious churches, this magnificent edifice stands out for its expansive main aisle, lavishly adorned with gold leaf, ornate plaster, and elaborate wood carvings. Drawing inspiration from two Roman Jesuit churches, La Compañía represents a pinnacle of Spanish Baroque architecture in South America. It is not only the most elaborately decorated church in Quito but also considered the most exquisite in the entire country.
The church’s interior is resplendently embellished with golden ceilings, while the exterior boasts detailed stone carvings, earning it the reputation as the most magnificent and stunning church in Quito, and arguably in Ecuador.
Yet, this architectural gem was nearly lost to the Ecuadorians when a fire ravaged the church’s interior. Since that calamity, restoration specialists have been diligently working to restore the church to its original splendor. Despite their efforts, the disparity between the new gold and the original is noticeable, revealing the sections that were most impacted by the fire.
