Surfing Through History: A Day at Chichén Itzá and Beyond
As a nomadic surfer, I was drawn to the allure of Chichén Itzá and the promise of adventure. Join me as I explore ancient pyramids, swim in a hidden cenote, and savor the flavors of Valladolid.
A Journey Through Time: Chichén Itzá
The sun was just beginning to rise as we set off from our hotel in Tulum, the anticipation of the day ahead buzzing in the air. As a seasoned traveler, I’ve chased waves across Central America, but this time, I was chasing history. Our first stop was the legendary Chichén Itzá, a place that had long been on my bucket list. The journey there was smooth, with a comfortable bus ride that included breakfast sandwiches and juice boxes to fuel our adventure.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by Fabian, our English-speaking guide, whose passion for the Mayan culture was infectious. As we wandered through the ancient ruins, Fabian’s stories brought the stones to life, painting vivid pictures of the past. The towering pyramids stood as a testament to the ingenuity and mystery of the Mayan civilization. I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the precision of the Mayan architecture and the perfect waves I’ve surfed in Costa Rica. Both are testaments to the beauty of nature and human creativity.
Cooling Off in the Cenote
After soaking in the history of Chichén Itzá, it was time to cool off in the refreshing waters of a cenote. The bus ride to the cenote was a bit of an adventure itself, with the A/C giving out, but our guides handled the situation with grace, providing cold drinks and wipes to keep us comfortable. It reminded me of those unexpected challenges on the road to the perfect surf spot—sometimes the journey is just as memorable as the destination.
The cenote was a hidden gem, a natural pool surrounded by lush greenery. As I dove into the cool, clear water, I felt a sense of freedom and connection to the earth, much like the feeling of catching a wave. The cenote was a place of tranquility, a perfect contrast to the bustling energy of Chichén Itzá. Our guide Fabian went above and beyond, ensuring our belongings were safe, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience.
A Taste of Valladolid
Our final stop was the charming town of Valladolid, where we indulged in a delicious buffet at La Casona de Valladolid. The pork Pibil tacos were a highlight, bursting with flavor and perfectly complemented by a refreshing spinach and cucumber agua fresca. As we strolled through the quaint streets, I was reminded of the small surf towns I’ve visited, each with its own unique charm and welcoming spirit.
Valladolid was a delightful end to our day, offering a glimpse into the rich culture and history of the Yucatán Peninsula. As we boarded the bus back to Tulum, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the awe-inspiring pyramids of Chichén Itzá to the serene waters of the cenote and the vibrant flavors of Valladolid, it was a journey that fed the soul and sparked the imagination. Just like finding that perfect wave, this tour was an experience I’ll carry with me, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that awaits when we step off the beaten path.
