From Surf to Rapids: A Thrilling Day on Costa Rica’s Savegre River
In search of a new thrill beyond the waves, I ventured to Quepos for a whitewater rafting adventure on the Savegre River. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a paddle and discover the exhilarating rapids and hidden waterfalls of Costa Rica.
The Journey to the Rapids
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, but the allure of the Savegre River’s whitewater rapids was too tempting to resist. My wife and I, always on the lookout for our next adventure, found ourselves in the vibrant town of Quepos, ready to trade our surfboards for paddles.
The drive to the river was an adventure in itself. Our driver expertly navigated the steep, winding roads, offering glimpses of the lush Costa Rican landscape. The anticipation built with every turn, and I couldn’t help but feel a familiar rush of excitement, akin to spotting the perfect wave from the shore. Amigos del Rio, the company guiding our journey, took us to a higher starting point on the river, promising a longer and more thrilling ride.
Riding the Rapids
Once we hit the water, the real fun began. Our guides, Luis and Nicolas, were the epitome of professionalism and humor, making sure everyone felt safe and ready for the adventure ahead. The Savegre River’s Class II and III rapids were a thrilling challenge, each wave and turn offering a new burst of adrenaline. It reminded me of the unpredictable nature of the ocean, where every wave is a new story waiting to be told.
Our group was diverse, with ages ranging from 11 to 75, yet the guides managed to cater to everyone’s comfort levels. Their expertise was evident as they navigated us through the rapids, ensuring that no one fell out of the boats. The camaraderie among our group was palpable, each successful maneuver through the rapids met with cheers and laughter.
A Waterfall and a Feast
Midway through our journey, we stopped for a snack of fresh pineapple and cookies, a delightful treat that fueled us for the next leg of our adventure. A short walk led us to a stunning waterfall, a hidden gem nestled within the lush rainforest. The sight was breathtaking, a reminder of the untouched beauty that Costa Rica has to offer.
After conquering the rapids, we returned to the Amigos del Rio headquarters for a hearty lunch. The spread was generous, and the food was delicious, a perfect end to an exhilarating day. As we shared stories and laughter over our meal, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience.
The day was impeccably organized, with thoughtful touches that made the adventure even more memorable. The photos and videos captured by the team were a wonderful keepsake, allowing us to relive the excitement of the day. If you’re ever in Costa Rica, I highly recommend rafting the Savegre River for a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
