Manuel Antonio Night Tour: A Nature Adventure Through Dark Paths

Manuel Antonio

This is an exploration journey into the natural world, traversed through a shadowy trail. It is a prerequisite to wear closed-toe shoes for protection, and long pants are strongly suggested. A reminder that our surroundings are natural, hence animal sightings will be completely unpredictable.

Highlights
  • Manuel Antonio - The tour IS NOT inside the Manuel Antonio National Park, is on a private reserve right next.
We, as a guides, have the necessary experience to make a safe entrance to the place, which is beautiful but at the same time very careful, since it is normal to run into snakes (boas, fer de lance, bocaracá, among others) frogs (red eyes, crystal, bull, ding) toads, tarantulas, mammals (kinkajous, anthill, sloths). The tour is a challenge for the guide, since each night is different and different species are seen according to the night. However, with our high definition telescope we can make your experience unique and unforgettable, as we can see the animals more closely, and photograph them through your cell phone or camera.
The tour ends at approximately 8:00 p.m. and then after thanking you, we are making the return to the respective hotels.

Night tour - We booked the night tour through Makanda and I loved it! Guides kept us very safe… though you do need to listen to them (one teenager walked closer than recommended to a poisonous snake even after being told where it was). Saw a lot of cool frogs and some tarantulas and a scorpion. Totally different than things we saw during the day. Well done!

Great night tour with many reptiles and spiders - This our second night tour and the sighting was great. We saw many frogs, spiders and a snake. Also different species of insects. The guide has a perfect spotlight combined with his telescope to zoom in on these creatures and explains the ins and outs. Expect some rain, so be prepared to protect your camera gear.

Such a great... - Such a great experience!!! Diego was incredibly helpful and informative throughout the whole tour. We booked a group excursion but it ended up just being my husband and I — the intimate experience was one of a kind. We leaned a lot about not only the animals but also the country and it’s beautiful people. 10/10 would recommend.

Must see for wildlife enthusiasts - The staff was so friendly, and our guide was very knowledgeable. We attempted to see wildlife at night on our own at a private property to no avail. It is clear that expertise is needed to spot and learn about these wonderful creatures.

Pleasant night hike with some night activity - Guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely a tour that is all about luck. We saw one tree frog (get eaten by a raccoon since we were shining our lights on it), two snakes and a bunch of spiders. Pretty easy walk on a private property path.

Sloth and snakes are hard... - Sloth and snakes are hard to find in Manuel Antonio. You must take night tour if you want to see hard to spot insects or animals. We saw 3 species of serpents and a scorpion.

Not recommend - I booked this tour via viator.com. In the page, it wbs written a bottled water is includ. But in reality, it wasn't included. Additionary, the pick up driver was late 20 minutes without any contact. After I sent message on WhatsApp, he came. But other guests weren't in the car, they waited me at entrance of the tour. However after the tour, they used same transfer with me. So, I doubt that the driver forgot to pick me up. The guide was not too bad, we saw 2 kinds of spider, a snake, and some insects. But Poor quality of the entire operation and not worth $57.

Avoid - I have many concerns about the night tour we took near Manuel Antonio, but I will start with the fact that one of the (far too big group) stood on a fer de lance snake and was incredibly lucky not to have been bitten. He was not walking ahead of the guide. The whole area was teaming with baby fer de lance and the guide seemed panicked and not in control. As a result of this he gave very little information about the few things he did spot and constantly tried to move on without all the group looking through the scope. He seemed inexperienced using the scope and didn’t lower it for my children so they mostly had to look a pictures on a phone which is not at all the point. His interaction with my children was very poor, and they ended up very scared. He moved very fast and we often got left behind. At one point we all had to pass within 1m of a snake in the attack pose (next to the path, not seen by the guide on the way in). I had to use myself to block/protect my children. At no point during booking did anyone say this was unsuitable for children, nor was there a safety briefing. I even had a flash light that ran very low on battery. We have done multiple tours with fantastic and passionate guides all over Costa Rica and this was by far the worst and most expensive. I’d like to add we are all snake fans and have really enjoyed viewing them in other places. But here it felt like every one for themselves and you couldn’t look around at the forest at all as you had to be constantly scanning the path. I wish I had read reviews and not booked through our hotel. Also wish we had left early when I had initial misgivings.
