Its construction commenced in the 15th century and showcases elements of Medieval, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and Romantic architecture.

Located atop Monte da Pena, the palace was erected on the site of an ancient monastery belonging to the Order of St. Jerome. Enchanted by Sintra, he decided to purchase the convent and the surrounding land to construct a summer palace for the royal family.

Exceptional Experience in Portugal - I had an incredible experience with Unique Portugal Tours during my visit to Portugal last January. We took a two-day trip to Sintra and the Fátima Sanctuary, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.
Our guide, Pedro, was absolutely amazing! He went above and beyond to ensure everything was flawless. We traveled in a spotless, new Mercedes equipped with excellent navigation, making the journey smooth and enjoyable. Pedro also provided fantastic food recommendations, introducing us to some of the best local cuisine.
In addition to his professionalism and knowledge, Pedro speaks excellent English, which made communication effortless. His insights and friendly demeanor truly enhanced our experience.
If you’re planning a trip to Portugal, I highly recommend booking with this agency and asking for Pedro! It was an unforgettable experience.

Lisbon and Sintra, packed with awe in between! - Pedro is quite engaging, very knowledgeable, friendly and had some excellent sight, gastronomical and shopping recommendations. Polite and chivalrous as well! We would do this again and recommend you consider for a wonderful adventure.

Pedro was Amazing the entire experience was outstanding! - Pedro was spectacular, professional, and very knowledgeable! We do quite a bit of traveling. I’m at 83 countries now and we spent some time in Spain in Portugal. Our hotel is Sheridan connected us with Pedro and we utilized him for tours and some other transportation needs we had while looking at some properties. He was spectacular, again, very knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make sure our experiences were perfect. Further, the vehicle was beautiful. It was a Mercedes S class that provided the ultimate luxury touch for a tour and transportation experiences! I highly recommend him and the company.

Wonderful Day Trip fromLisbon - The tour was amazing and our guide/driver was excellent providing a lot of interesting history and knowledge about places visited. The driving was comfortable and professional. He even brought us to a hidden gem restaurant that we never would have found on our own. My husband and I highly recommend Unique Portugal Tours!

Excursions outside of Lisbon - Pedro was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. He recommended excellent restaurants where we were treated well. In addition to a day at Sintra, he also took us wine tasting and to a tile factory on a separate day. We highly recommend selecting Pedro for private tours.

Amazing experience - Pedro is hands down the best tour guide we've ever had the pleasure of working with! From the moment we met him, we knew that we were in good hands. Pedro took the time to understand our interests and created a customized program that perfectly matched our preferences. His recommendations for hotels and restaurants were spot-on, and we were blown away by the level of attention and care he put into every aspect of our trip.
Over the course of three days, Pedro showed us the very best that Lisbon has to offer. His extensive knowledge of the city's history and culture was truly impressive, and he went above and beyond to ensure that we had a rich and immersive experience. From the iconic landmarks to the hidden gems, Pedro took us to all the right places and provided us with fascinating insights along the way.
What sets Pedro apart, however, is his genuine warmth and enthusiasm. He truly loves what he does, and it shows in every interaction. He went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and happy, and we felt like we were traveling with a dear friend rather than a tour guide. Sintra and More - Joao Pedro was our Tour Guide. He did a GREAT job. It started out as a rainy, overcast day, so Joao Pedro asked for some flexibility in arranging our trip with the weather and things couldn’t have worked out much better. While it rained we enjoyed The National Palace at Queluz. This wasn’t even on our plan or schedule, but we ended up spending hours there. We went up to Sintra and it was crowded and still a little rainy. Joao Pedro pointed out a couple of places on which we should focus our time. They worked out great. We got some shopping done (again unexpectedly). From there we went to Colares/Cabo da Roca and got not only great views (and pictures), but found a locals restaurant with magnificent fresh seafood. Then, down to Cascais where Joao Pedro gave us a little cultural tour of the seaport. Joao Pedro was knowledgable, honest, friendly, funny and very helpful. We ended up with a slightly different tour than we had planned, but we believe it was a much better tour than we could have expected. Highly recommended.

Missed the Palace Pena, but still nice - We visited the National Palace and another palace on the way to Sintra. Both were very interesting and scenic. We had a lovely lunch across the street from the National Palace - the view and food could not be beat. We never saw the famous Pena Palace (in all the pictures) because of the lines (our guide told us), which was a disappointment. We finished up by walking around Cascais, a beautiful beach resort town. Overall it was a very nice day, just not what we expected. Our guide mainly drove us and dropped us off at each location where we were on our own - he did not guide us at those locations. So if you want informative touring, this isn't the best option, but if you want time to yourself, it works. So it depends on what you like. Our guide was nice but kept trying to sell us tour services from his private company which was awkward. He recommended the Oceanarium, and dropped us off there, which by US standards was small and disappointing, despite being billed as the "biggest in Europe." Overall a very pleasant day.
