Highlights

Launched in 1912, the TSS Earnslaw is the grandest vessel ever to ply the waters of Lake Wakatipu. Today, the TSS Earnslaw is believed to be the only coal-fired passenger-carrying vessel still operating in the southern hemisphere. Relive the elegance of travel in the early 1900s as you cruise across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Country Farm and take in Queenstown’s magnificent alpine scenery.

Disembark at the Walter Peak Country Farm, for a gourmet BBQ buffet dinner showcasing New Zealand specialties at the Colonel’s Homestead. Sample an expansive array of New Zealand’s traditional cuisine from the buffet including meat and seafood from the outdoor grill, antipasto selection salads and vegetables. Then finish your meal with our irresistible selection of homemade desserts, a New Zealand cheeseboard and freshly brewed tea and coffee. A range of wines and other beverages are available for purchase. The resident pianist will provide background music and the open fire creates a cozy atmosphere in the cooler months.

Great Overall and Comprehensive Experience for Adults and Kids Alike! - This was a fantastic experience! We've been to Walter Peak many, many times on the beautiful boat TSS Earnslaw, over the course of 20 years - for lunch and dinner. But this was the first time we've done the cruise and farm tour which was an amazing three and a half hour experience. We were motivated by having a 2 year old and 5 year old with us and it was a wonderful experience for two city-raised children to see farm animals close up, and even feed them by hand with the food provided by our guide Quin. He was the person who showed us around the farm, guiding everyone to the animals, bringing the food, and describing facts about the animals. His explanations were really great - easy for the children to understand, he had a great and loud speaking voice and clearly he really loved these animals. After the farm tour we had a lovely afternoon tea, with something for everyone, including the children. Delicious blini with smoked salmon, cheese scones with jam and cream, various cakes, hot drinks and more! Following the afternoon tea we experienced the sheep-shearing demonstration, also done by Quin (with a terrific and comprehensive explanation), and a demonstration of rounding up sheep by the working dog, Kim. I never get tired of going to Walter Peak - it's a beautiful place, the boat trip is always a joy and with its open view of the mechanical workings of the engine from above it's amazing, and we love it! The gardens and homestead at Walter Peak are very picturesque and again, we couldn't resist taking lots of photos! This experience was fantastic for the children, but I have to say that there were mostly adults on the tour and they all seemed to really enjoy it, showing a lot of appreciation to Quin. I would highly recommend this farm tour and cruise from Queenstown to Walter Peak for any visitor to the area.

Unbelievable meal in a unique location. - The meal, location, and service was absolutely outstanding. The variety of food available was enormous, with all you can eat buffet style. All the various meats were cooked to perfection and there was also a good variety of desserts. The sumptuous meal was followed by an interesting sheep sheering and sheep dog display for those unfamiliar with these processes. The only negative to the evening was the trip to and from via the TSS Earnslaw, which is the subject of a separate review.

Fantastic - We did the dinner cruise on the steamship. It was fabulous, the ship is great and you can go and view the engine room. Fabulous dinner at the homestead followed by a farm show. We loved it and I would recommend it to anyone.

Still a fantastic activity - Second time to Walter Peak. First back in 2019 and again this year. The experience was again fantastic with plenty of food. More than enough this time. Would recommend booking this to everyone who is coming to Queenstown.

A great experience. Exceeded expectations - We really enjoyed the trip. Recommend no later than a 5 pm departure if you want to do dinner and the sheep ranch show. Steam ship was amazing - a trip into the past. Dinner was very good. Food was normal farm fare but tasty. Lots of meat, potatoes, vegetables and salads. Sheep dog and the handler were very entertaining. Had not seen a sheep sheered before. Scenery was spectacular

Delightful evening cruise and great dinner - The magnificent old TSS Earnslaw seemed rather crowded on the outward voyage down the lake but had plenty of space upon return. Commentary from the captain was interesting and being able to see the workings of the old vessel was a treat for the mechanically minded. On board pianist was a nice touch for atmosphere and bar staff were busy but quick. The gardens and buildings at the farm were a delight and the staff were attentive and friendly. The meal was both delicious and plentiful - it was your fault if you went hungry and they made a genuine effort for a vegan in our group. There was a huge variety and a well organised buffet style so you moved through quickly without crowding. The delightful and friendly wait-staff were attentive and joined in the fun, taking group photos, sharing stories and the obligatory group welcome as the boat arrived. The after dinner farm demo was entertaining and informative. All round a very enjoyable experience that should be a Queenstown bucket list item.

A Must When In Queenstown! - We booked this adventure on our first night in Queenstown. I must say often times buffet style dinners can be a bit institutional, but Walter Peak Farm did an outstanding job on the food. All of the meats were cooked to perfection and they kept the buffet bars well stocked. The salads, sides and desserts were great too! The gardens were still beautiful even with it being early Fall. We headed out to the amphitheater for the sheep shearing show and Phillip the shearer and his amazing sheep herding dog we’re so much fun to watch, This guy is right where he needs to be, he is doing such a great job and seems to absolutely love what he does! Give him a sponsorship!! Great job by all the staff with their friendly and efficient service, The trip across the the lake in the old steamship was fantastic as well. My husband especially enjoyed watching the engine room at work. This tour was definitely worth it and a great way to see the views!
