- Gobustan Rock Art - Accompanied by a guide and driver, visitors will travel to the Gobustan National Reserve. Known as the Museum of Petroglyphs, this outdoor museum is situated about 65 km from Baku. The prehistoric rock carvings, or petroglyphs, serve as an artistic “archive” of human evolution on Earth. These “articles” represent the earliest communications from humans to the outside world. Azerbaijan hosts several such outdoor “archives,” with the largest located in Gobustan, within the Baku State Reserve of History, Ethnography, and Arts, near Baku. This rocky area lies at the southeastern base of the Great Caucasus Range, close to the Caspian Sea and a modern highway that follows the ancient Shirvan road.
- Mud Volcanoes - Despite their name, mud volcanoes are not true volcanoes but resemble them due to their appearance. They vary in shape and size, with many being quite small. Since they lack lava and rarely erupt, they are safe to approach closely. Azerbaijan is home to more than half of the world’s mud volcanoes, approximately 300 in total, with some located in Gobustan.
- Bibi-Heybat Mosque - The Bibi-Heybat Mosque, reconstructed in 1990, is a revival of the original mosque built by the 28th ruler of the Shirvanshahs state during the late 13th century by Azerbaijan’s Elkhanid state, under Abu Fath Farrukhzad ibn Akhsitan ibn Faiburz. Constructed by Mahmud ibn Sad, the mosque was demolished by the Bolsheviks in 1936 during the USSR’s anti-religion campaign. The complex’s interior was richly adorned with ornaments. Inside, the mosque features an elongated rectangular room with a lancet arch. Under the dome, a chandelier-candlestick was suspended, with its hook encircled by stained glass.
