The area is famous for its unique natural phenomenon of burning natural gas outlets, where underground gas meets oxygen and ignites.
- Yanardag State Historical, Cultural and Natural Reserve - Yanar Dag, known as the “eternal flame,” is one of Azerbaijan’s most renowned tourist attractions. Although more of a hill than a mountain, its slopes have been ablaze with natural gas for centuries. The flames, stretching several meters long and about 10 meters wide, create a mesmerizing sight, especially in the evening. Located 25 km north of Baku, Yanar Dag has been a state-protected conservation area since 2007.
- Gobustan Rock Art - Visitors can explore Gobustan National Reserve with a guide and driver. Known as the Museum of Petroglyphs, this outdoor museum is situated approximately 65 km from Baku. The prehistoric rock drawings, or petroglyphs, serve as an “archive” of human evolution. These outdoor “archives” are rare, with one of the largest located in Gobustan, at the Baku State Reserve of History, Ethnography, and Arts, near the Caspian Sea and a modern highway built on the ancient Shirvan road.
- Mud Volcanoes - Despite their name, mud volcanoes are not true volcanoes but resemble them. They vary in shape and size, with many being quite small. Since they lack lava and rarely erupt, visitors can safely approach them. Azerbaijan is home to over half of the world’s mud volcanoes, around 300 in total, with some located in Gobustan.
- Bibi-Heybat Mosque - The Bibi-Heybat Mosque, reconstructed in 1990, is a restored version of the original mosque built by the 28th ruler of the Shirvanshahs state in the late 13th century by Azerbaijan’s Elkhanid state, under Abu Fath Farrukhzad ibn Akhsitan ibn Faiburz. Originally constructed by Mahmud ibn Sad, the mosque was destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936 during the USSR’s anti-religion campaign. The mosque’s interior was richly decorated with ornaments, featuring an oblong rectangular room with a lancet arch. Under the dome, a chandelier-candlestick hung from a hook surrounded by stained glass.
