Discovering the Hidden Surfing Gem of Punta de Mita
Drawn by the promise of uncrowded waves and a family-run surf school, I ventured to Punta de Mita. The experience was a refreshing escape from the usual surf spots, offering both tranquility and adventure.
A New Surfing Adventure Awaits
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve had the privilege of riding waves in some of the most breathtaking spots across Central America. Yet, the allure of Punta de Mita’s surf school, run by a passionate family, was too tempting to resist. The promise of catching a wave in a less crowded, pristine environment was a siren call I couldn’t ignore.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by Alejandro and his sons, Alex Jr. and Diego. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear that they were as passionate about teaching as they were about surfing. The initial balance test and pop-up technique session on the beach was a great way to warm up and get into the groove. It was a refreshing change from the bustling beaches of Sayulita, where the crowds often overshadow the experience.
Riding the Waves
The decision to head to a more secluded beach was a stroke of genius. The drive along the highway, followed by a short walk, led us to a serene stretch of sand where the waves were just right. The instructors’ knowledge of the local conditions was evident, and their choice of location made all the difference.
Once in the water, the real fun began. The instructors were attentive, offering tips and encouragement as we paddled out and attempted to catch our first waves. Their passion for surfing was evident in every word and gesture, making the experience both educational and exhilarating. The space to surf without the usual crowd was a luxury, allowing us to focus on the thrill of the ride.
A Perfect Day in Punta de Mita
After an invigorating session, Alejandro and his team recommended a fantastic spot for lunch nearby. The local flavors were the perfect complement to a morning spent in the ocean. As I sat there, savoring the meal, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventure.
The journey back to Bucerias was easy and affordable, with buses running frequently. The entire experience was seamless, from the initial contact with Alejandro to the final wave goodbye. It’s no wonder that many, like the family I met, are already planning their return. For anyone looking to catch their first wave or simply enjoy a day in the sun, Punta Mita Surf School is a must-visit.
