Setting Sail on the Spirit of the Sea

The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the horizon as I made my way to the harbor in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria. The anticipation of spotting dolphins and whales in their natural habitat had me buzzing with excitement. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the ocean, and this boat tour promised a new way to experience its wonders. The Spirit of the Sea, our vessel for the day, was a sight to behold with its spacious decks and a unique glass bottom that offered a glimpse into the vibrant marine life below.

After a brief check-in process, I found myself a prime spot on the upper deck, eager to feel the sea breeze on my face. The journey took us about six miles out to sea, where we paused to scan the waters for any signs of dolphins. True to his word, as we ventured further out to ten miles, the call came through – dolphins ahead!

The engines were cut, and a hush fell over the boat as we waited. Suddenly, the water erupted with life as a pod of around 30 dolphins, both adults and youngsters, danced around us. They glided effortlessly through the waves, their sleek bodies glistening in the sunlight. It was a mesmerizing sight, one that left me in awe of these magnificent creatures. Watching them playfully dart around the boat, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of kinship with these ocean dwellers, a reminder of the beauty and freedom that the sea offers.

A Refreshing Dip and the Journey Back

After spending a magical 15 minutes with the dolphins, we began our journey back to the harbor. The captain announced a short stop for those who wished to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters. As someone who thrives in the ocean, I couldn’t resist the opportunity. Diving into the cool embrace of the sea was invigorating, a perfect way to cap off the experience.

Back on board, the crew served refreshing drinks, and the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and shared joy. The Spirit of the Sea had delivered on its promise, providing a respectful and ethical wildlife-watching experience that left a lasting impression. As we docked back at the harbor, I felt a renewed appreciation for the ocean and its inhabitants, a sentiment I hope to carry into my future adventures.
