As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the laid-back lifestyle of the Caribbean. So when I heard about the Private Dominican Cigar Factory Tour in Puerto Plata, I knew it was an adventure I couldn’t pass up. The idea of exploring the art of cigar-making, from seed to light, intrigued me. I was eager to dive into this unique experience and learn more about the Dominican cigar industry.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Glen and his son Xander, who were as warm and welcoming as the tropical breeze. Their passion for cigars was infectious, and I could tell right away that this was going to be a memorable day. The Vivonte Cigar Factory & Lounge was a cozy haven, with leather couches and a small bar that set the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and conversation.

The Art of Cigar Making

The tour began with an insightful overview of the history of the Dominican cigar industry. Glen and Xander shared fascinating stories about how the industry has evolved since the Cuban revolution. I was captivated by their knowledge and the pride they took in their craft.

We moved on to the cigar rolling stations, where I had the chance to try my hand at rolling a cigar. It was a delicate process, requiring precision and patience. Xander guided me through each step, explaining the importance of the fermentation and aging processes. I gained a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into each cigar.

The highlight of the tour was the opportunity to sample a Vivonte cigar. Xander recommended the Quevedo 56x6, a full-bodied cigar that was smooth and flavorful. As I lit the cigar and took my first puff, I was enveloped in a rich aroma that perfectly complemented the relaxed ambiance of the lounge.

Conversations and Connections

As we settled into the leather couches, cigars in hand, the conversation flowed effortlessly. We talked about everything from sports and politics to family and, of course, cigars. Glen and Xander’s genuine hospitality made me feel like I was among old friends.

Time seemed to slip away as we shared stories and laughter. Before I knew it, four hours had passed, and I was reluctant to leave. The experience was more than just a tour; it was a connection with people who shared a passion for quality and craftsmanship.

As I left Vivonte with a bundle of cigars in hand, I knew this wouldn’t be my last visit. The cigars were exceptional, and the experience was priceless.
