The Journey Begins: Finding Our Way to Adventure

The day started with a bit of a scavenger hunt as we navigated our way to the meeting point for the Damajagua Waterfalls Adventure. The directions led us out to the highway, which felt a bit odd, and we found ourselves stopping to ask locals if we were headed in the right direction. It was a bit of a challenge, but the anticipation of the adventure ahead kept our spirits high. Once we finally found our driver, we were relieved to step into the cool comfort of an air-conditioned van. Our guides, Xander and Alex, greeted us with warm smiles and friendly banter, setting the tone for the day.

As a former pro surfer, I’m no stranger to the thrill of the unknown, and this excursion promised just that. The unexpected twist of having a private tour, due to the other two members of our group not showing up, added an exclusive touch to our adventure. We joined a larger group from a cruise line, but the camaraderie and shared excitement made the trek enjoyable. The guides ensured everyone was comfortable, stopping every 5-10 minutes for a breather. As we reached the falls, the real fun began. Unlike the cruise line group, we were free to jump and slide through the waterfalls, an exhilarating experience that reminded me of catching the perfect wave.

The Party Continues: Rum Punch and Local Delights

After the thrill of the waterfalls, the adventure seamlessly transitioned into a lively party. Xander, our guide-turned-host, kept the energy high with free-flowing rum punch and vibrant local music. As we made our way back, he surprised us with a stop to pick fresh bananas, a sweet and unexpected treat that added to the day’s charm.

Reflecting on the experience, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a unique part of Puerto Plata. The combination of natural beauty, thrilling adventure, and local culture made for an unforgettable day.
