Additional Information

In the historic areas of Mouraria and Graça in Lisbon, intricately winding streets dwell under the shadow of St. George Castle, an air of transformation (and unmistakably, garlic) is palpable. Despite being an oft forgotten part of the city, the district is now witnessing rapid redevelopment, with ancient structures being refurbished, diverse communities establishing their base, and a wave of new eateries challenging the area’s notoriously rugged reputation. This part of the city is where fado, the signature music genre of Lisbon, originated in 19th century obscure taverns. It’s also one of the fortresses of the yearly St. Anthony festivities where the scent of grilled sardines dominates the street corners. A diverse demographic cohabit here, from the aging locals and new arrivals, to Portugal’s bohemians. This is where the city’s age-old flavor blend along with tantalizing proofs of the area’s ongoing evolution.

Location
Largo do Correio Mor
Rua de São Mamede
The meeting point is the Largo do Correio-Mor, the small pink square with trees in Rua de São Mamede, 1100-534 Lisboa, very close to the Baixa area. We will be meeting right in front of the CPLP building

One of the best tours ever! - I enjoyed every single minute of the tour. Irene is very knowledgeable and she led us to several hidden gems of the neighborhood that I would never found by myself. The food is very well prepared and the tour is thoughtful. It indeed requires a bit hiking up and down, but that’s the nature of streets in Lisbon and nothing is to an extreme. The views after each hike were totally worth it. 10/10 a great tour and I would love to do other ones with them next time!

An Absolute Blast, Great Guide & The Best Food - This tour was the highlight of our 9 day Portugal trip. Our guide was Martim, and his charisma, knowledge, and friendliness made this tour outstanding. When you are walking through the city and folks are recognizing him and saying hello, you know you are with the right guide! The food on the tour was amazing, and there was plenty of alcohol too! You will visit places that tourists do not frequent or know exist. We can't wait to go back to Lisbon and try another tour!! We thought it could never be done but this tour totally eclipsed our Culinary Backstreets Barcelona tour, lol! We will never forget this experience, thanks Martim.

Fabulous tour - highlight of the trip! - This tour was absolutely the highlight of our (too short) visit to Lisbon. Our tour guide Kika was fantastic and by the end of the tour felt like an old friend. She took us to local spots where she was greeted with hugs. We felt a part of the city. Not only were we introduced to the amazing flavors of Lisbon, we learned about history, culture, art, architecture. The views on this tour are amazing. Definitely off the tourist route. One thousand percent recommend!

Totally authentic tour with great local places of the beaten track - I had a wonderful food tour experience in a small group, which allowed us to test and experience smaller, more unique, and authentic places. I was impressed by the selection of restaurants. Took the time to go back to some of them cause the tasting was so good. Irene our guide was very knowledgeable and had the skill to engage with each of the participants, which made it also a very personal experience. I totally enjoyed it and can recommend it.

A great culinary tour of the Lisbon neighborhoods - My wife and I had a great tour with Irene of the Mouraria and Graca neighborhoods - definitely the hidden flavors of the Hillside. We did a lot of walking up and down the hills, but the 5 hour tour went very fast. Irene not only discussed the food we ate but gave us a great narrative of the area and its history. We highly recommend this tour for authentic Portuguese cuisine that is not touristy.

An Amazing Variety of Food, History, and Culture from a Knowledgable Local Guide - This was the 3rd CB tour I've done and it definitely met their high standards. Excellent local guide (Martin) who had lived in Graca, a wide range of food and experiences, lots of history and culture as well as food. The highlight for me was the impromptu fado concert we got from four older gentleman hanging around in a social club where we went to get "live flaming chorizo" (chorizo cooked in an alcohol flame on a special dish). They got out their guitar and serenaded us with four songs; fado in its natural habitat. We had a wide variety of foods from about 8 different places and got to meet the store owners and chefs or staff at most of them.

Fabulous Tour : Socially responsible, extremely enjoyable and tasty - The tour was wonderful- tasty food, wonderful views and the guide Irene was both knowledgeable and super friendly. I spent a week in Lisbon before going on the tour-and was sorry not to start my visit with the tour as it gave me a completely new perspective on the city, it’s history and of course the wonderful local food. From now on, I hope to start my visits in foreign cities with a Culinary Backstreet Tour wherever possible. It was hurt warming to see the friendly relationship with the local restaurant owners- a truly responsible tourism

Fabulous Food & Tour - This tour was one of our highlights during our 5 day visit to Lisbon. We picked this particular tour because it visited a more diverse area of Lisbon and we wanted to experience that in both information as well as food. Irene was an amazing guide! She was knowledgeable about the neighborhoods and the food. It seemed more like we were walking around the Mouraria and Graca districts with a friend rather than a guide. Irene was funny and really made this an enjoyable afternoon for us. The food was delicious and I highly recommend this tour!

Highlight of our trip to Lisbon! - This tour was beyond a doubt the best tour we’ve ever been on. Our host was knowledgeable and entertaining. He shared his love of Lisbon, its food, culture, architecture and history. He introduced us to local residents. The food was delicious. We ate sardines, snails, clams and much more. The tour was scheduled to last 5 hours but we were with our host for 7 hours. If you only do one tour in Lisbon, this should be the one!

Highlight of our trip to Lisbon! - We spent 3 days in Lisbon and this was the highlight of our time there! Our guide Kika was extremely friendly and knowledgeable . She described with such a passion and depth not only the history of the areas we were visiting, but also the complex history of food we were able to sample. Being able to taste the food gave the experience a whole new dimension. She took us to places we never would’ve found on our own, and not only was the food at each and every place delicious, the restaurant owners and workers were very welcoming and friendly . I would do this tour over and over again if possible! Lots of walking and eating…what could be better?!? It was also wonderful to see Kika’s face light up as she described with such pride, the rich and ancient history of her beautiful city. This tour is a must for anyone who loves history, authentic Portuguese food, and exploring!
