Time suspended - Unique experience in a timeless, beautiful place, but where it is impossible not to feel the suffering and loneliness of its history

Full day excursion to wildlife reserve of Asinara Island. - The full day tour to Asinara Island has been a very wanderful experience. Our guide Paolo was an incredible source of both historical and natural informations and explanations. We have visited a lot of ex-jails, including the bunker where the boss nr.1 of Mafia, Totò Riina, was prisoner during the criminal trial. In the afternoon, we had the possibility to stay on beautiful coves in front of a limpid stained sea.

Great tour - Nelly was great looking after me as the only English speaker - non stop for 3 hours commentary in Italian and English - spectacular effort. Beautiful island, interesting history and great beaches for lunch and swimming. This is not to be missed if you are in Sardinia. Do it!

Asinara tour by foreigners. Beautiful island. - It started for us with a 2hour drive. Up on arrival we didnt know where to go so we thougt we ask one of the people who sells tickets. They didnt speak english too well so it was a bit of a struggle. We could only buy a parking ticket there and they wanted to see our tickets for the boat to see which one we had to take. Unfortunately on the ticket there was no information according to the man so he was not able to help us. After some quick thinking we remembered to have read the name of the boat so we had to look it up and the man could finally help us. We got to the boat and another man checked our tickets. Here a woman jumped to it, she was called cecilia and she was our tourguide. At first she seemed really nice and told us about how to go on, which was really nice after the situation before. She also told us on arrival on asinara there were toilets and we had to wait for about 10 minutes so she could prepare the car. So we did. We went to the toilet, which was apparently everyones idea because there was a big line. It was all a bit chaotic as the mens room had to be entered through the womens room and at the womens room, one toilet didnt have a lock neither toiletpaper. But well, after being done we waited outside for our guide to come back. We had a car with another couple and the guide to ourselves. The other couple was italian an did rather speak italian then english, although they understood both. It was fine but cecilia therefore had to do the whole story in both languages. Sometimes i didnt notice she switched so i missed a few words but it was okay. She also told us her english wasnt too well, she said she studied 100 hours of english. We reassured her it was no problem and we could easily understand her and there was no problem. So the tour went on. She showed us a lot of places and asked about our interest on the island. We told her and asked about the animals and the turtle shelter Crama, which i was very interested in. She said at this moment there would be only 1 turtle (which is good for the turtles of course) and that we only could be there in specific time slot, of which she was not sure we would make it. We said we would see what happened and if we would not make it, so be it. The tour went on, saw some different wild animals and a lot of the prisons. When we went to the museum in one of the prisons (same thing happened later on in another prison) we got a bit of a time pressure. We had to see it within 10 minutes and then we would go on. It did feel a bit hasted. We also had a place where we were allowed to snorkel and swim and had a bit more then an hour to relax. Then we had to go back to not miss the boat. So on our way back, cecilia told the italian couple in italian that we (the english couple) were not responsive enough and she didnt know how to say half of the things she had told them in italian. I really found this disrespectfull as she could have said this to us and talked to us about it before going behind our backs. She might think we couldnt speak italian but that does not mean that we cannot understand a few things. But ok we apparantly were not responsive enough because we didnt ask at every 7th donkey we saw if it was a mooflon or wanted to photograph the 100th wild donkey we saw. So we tried to start a conversation about something near the place we live related to what she just told us before about caves and after the first sentence she immediately asked us to speak slower because else she didnt understand. When we explained slowly, her reaction was the same as the one to her own cave stories, she wasnt experienced enough to do cave tours. The italian couple at least seemed to try to get a conversation out of it with us. We got back to the boat and were out of there as quick as we could and drove back. Asinara is a beautiful island to see and learn about and its really beautiful to see them having the national park on it but the tour guide ruined the end for us. Its one thing if you have to speak a foreign language and do not speak it as well as you wished, but its really unfair to blame it on us and that we were the problem. So if your italian this is probably a really nice tour and recommendable but as a foreign person, im not sure if you should do it. If you can enjoy yourself in silence and only with the views and be talked about in an other language, then you'll be fine but otherwise i would think twice about it. Although the beautiful asinara and everything it has to show for it, its pretty good. Dear cecilia, If you get to read this: Please do not ever again say anything about the tourists, if you are not able to explain it yourself, especially not in an other language because you might think, they dont understand. Its really not nice. Wishing you the best.

Names were not on the booking list - Booking with Viator was not good. I received several messages reminding about the trip, but none of them had details of the meeting point and instructions how to find the guide and name of the boat to look for. I had to ask random people to find the boarding. Then, our names were not on the list of participants that our guide had with her, although i had Viator’s vouchers. It took 20 minutes on the phone to figure out that we can go on the tour. That’s not all. We booked a tour with the English speaking guide. But the spots were available only for an Italian-speaking guide. We almost dropped this tour, but since we drove 2 hours to that point, our group decided to continue even without much understanding what is going on. Still, that was not the end of our misfortunes. Once we got to the island and boarded the Jeep - well, it is like a clown car show. Imagine to fit 4 Americans in 5x5x5 ft box. And the this box is on a roller conveyor belt. You cannot see a thing because the window slots are at your chest level. And it jerks all the way - up and down, left to right, while you are listening to the guide, who is happily pointing somewhere and describing it in Italian. Not fun. Well, there were several bonuses: crystal clear blue laguna to swim for 1.5 hours; i managed to ask to switch seats with other group participants, who were seating upfront. The guide, Carla, was trying her best to explain in English.
