Highlights
  • Castel del Monte - An octagonal stone crown. Fascinating and mysterious.
Isolated on a hill in the Murge, 540 meters above sea level from where a vast panorama is dominated.
The gaze sweeps west to the highest peaks of the entire karst plateau, and east to the Cathedral of Trani, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, and a little further on, the Gargano promontory.
Commissioned in 1240 by the Swabian Emperor Frederick II.
Subsequently, the building took on the roles of prison and ducal residence. Passed through various dominations and properties of different lords, for a long time, after repeated looting and plundering, it was a refuge for shepherds and robbers (especially in the 18th century). Purchased as a ruin by the Italian state in 1876 for 25,000 lire, it has since undergone continuous restorations; the most recent have recovered its ancient splendor.
Since 1996, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Additional Information

Located within the expansive Alta Murgia National Park, one experiences a feeling of limitless openness. The space is inviting for one to lose oneself in the endless horizons, with the sharp scent of wild thyme and mint, amidst the intensive greenery of wheat fields or stone pastures, set amidst the bright yellow of the ferula. Here, one might encounter orchids and birds of prey. This land, enriched by the touch of emperors, farmers, shepherds, woodcutters, and the climate itself, boasts a truly unique landscape and culture.

As we progress, stunning farmhouses welcome us, we pass through oak woodlands, traverse the age-old sheep trails of transhumance, exploring jazzi and post offices. Travelling on picturesque mule paths and amid wheat fields, we can marvel at immense haystacks and ancient cisterns.

Sheep herds can be seen meandering on the hills, merging seamlessly with the distinctive jagged rocks, earning this region its name.

We will finally reach the isolated octagonal stone crown, situated on a hill at a height of 540 meters above sea level, offering a commanding view of the vast surrounding panorama.

Cancelation - The organizer canceled my excursion on November 10 because he found another job... we were told that we had to take a taxi. We tried the buses but with the clock ticking and city buses not being reliable (1 hour after the scheduled pickup time, still nothing, a telephone number that doesn't work...), we called taxis, which were not available until almost dark. We are frustrated not to have seen this monument because it is the only organizer who provides transportation from the city. Finally; we went to Trani by bus, little consolation. I am waiting for the refund.
