Additional Information

The Zaloggo monument is situated not far from the archaeological spot of Kassopi. Historical accounts tell us that in 1803, 63 women from the Sοuli villages, along with their children, plunged off the cliff while dancing, to avoid capture by Ali Pasha’s troops (1788-1822).
The Acherontas strait and Estuary region is amongst the 18 sites of natural significance acknowledged as being the most impressive in that area.
Here, the most renowned necromancy site (or oracle of the dead) of antiquity can be found, near the northwest shores of the Acherousian lake.
The earliest mention of the Acheron necromanteion is found in Homer’s Odyssey, where Circe instructs Ulysses to seek out Teiresias, the blind prophet, in the underworld, to receive a prophecy for his journey back to Ithaka.

Live an ADVENTURE with this tour - We joined the tour w/Helen, and our driver/guide Ioannis. So much to SEE and TAKE IN. The remains of the temple of Augustus, Battle of Actium, the Oracle of Nikopolis, (this is weird), The monument of Zalongo: where in 1803 women & children jumped to their death. "live free or die" this was our work out for the day 400+ steps. Then lunch at Acheron Springs. Hard to believe we fit this all in, with an hour to spare prior to the ship disembarking. The VALUE for the $$ was EXCEPTIONAL Tim & Candace

Take a tour instead of a taxi! - We had to transfer from Nidri to Parga and I discovered that for not much more than the cost of a taxi we could do a wonderful tour with this company. We visited the ancient city of Nikopolis where we discovered an open air theatre, Doric columns and beautiful villas. We hiked up to the monument at the top of a mountain commemorating the women who jumped to their deaths with their children to avoid capture, we walked up the River of Acheron and visited Hades in the Necromantion. What a day! It was amazing and we were dropped at our hotel by 5p.m. Ioannis was informative, professional and friendly. The minivan was comfortable and had plenty of water available . I thoroughly recommend this company.
