Additional Information

Experience the splendor of Portugal’s history at three incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Tomar, Batalha, and Alcobaca, complemented by a visit to Almourol Castle and the ancient town of Obidos.

Surrounded by the protective walls of Tomar Castle, the Convent of the Knights Templar in Tomar stands as a testament to Portugal’s rich history. Initially constructed in the twelfth century for the Templar Order, this iconic monument underwent five centuries of alterations and emerged as a distinctive representation of Portugal’s engagement with foreign cultures from the Manueline period onwards.

Our journey continues to the Monastery of Batalha, a remarkable work of Gothic art, constructed by King João in remembrance of the triumphant Battle of Aljubarrota against the Castilians in 1385.

A short distance away awaits the Monastery of Alcobaça, a stunning exemplification of Cistercian Gothic art, brought to life in the twelfth century by our first King, D. Afonso Henriques.

We will conclude the day with a journey to Obidos, a beautifully preserved, medieval fortified town.

Visit for a day, leaving from Lisbon - A place that is rarely mentioned when traveling to Portugal, but it is worth visiting. The city of Tomar, in which these monuments are located, is the place of origin of the Order of Christ in Portugal. The history is very interesting and the size of Cidade de Deus (Church plus convent) is monumental. Maybe the photos don't show this size!

An incredible place - This is an incredible place that tourists seldom visit. But you should go. I was surprised that my guidebook bet Rick Steves did not have it. We visited it because one of my cousins had done so. You will not re great it. The monastery does not have guides, you roam on your own and discover the power that the Templar’s had. They financed many of the discoveries.
