Fabulous market tour and cooking class - This was a fabulous day, we met Jaya, Avi and Jaya's parents at their house and talked a little about Mauritius and Mauritian food then Avi drove us to the market with Jaya for a brilliant tour. First we were given gateaux piments and taken to a local fishmonger to choose a fish. At the market we had fresh roti and dal puri with a local milk shake then a extensive tour around the vegetable market where Jaya explained all the different vegetables, herbs and spices, it was a very hands on experience smelling the herbs and spices and understanding what to do with all the different vegetables. When everything was bought for lunch we were given a large coconut so we could taste fresh coconut water. Avi was very knowledgeable about all things Mauritian and very passionate about his country and taking people to see the real Mauritius. When we arrived back at their house a feast was prepared by Jaya and and her mum which we participated in whenever we wanted to. The end result was the best masala fish curry we have ever tasted. A genuine Mauritian experience which I would encourage everyone to do at least once!
