Embark on a journey to the historic town of Portobelo, christened by Christopher Columbus during his fourth voyage to the Americas in 1502. While it’s a humble fishing community now, it was once among Spain’s most affluent seaports from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Pirate incursions were common, despite the Spanish establishing various forts for protection, that now lie in ruins and were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. Upon arrival, you’ll embark on a 15-minute boat cruise to La Huerta Beach or similar, where you can bask in the morning amidst coconut trees, exotic wildlife, flora and crystal clear waters. Prior to returning to the city, you’ll have the opportunity to indulge in lunch at Portobelo Bay.
