The coming of age of Porto as a Tourist City - Julio is born and bred in Porto. He says ( and we agree ) that to have a guide with a personal knowledge of Porto’s amazing progress over the past 20 years gives more depth to such a tour. For us the societal impact of the growth of tourism on the population of Porto was the most fascinating part of his talk. Many parts of the inner city were no-go areas with squalid housing, high crime rates and chronic unemployment. Things looked pretty bleak. Then, as if my magic, along came tourism and with it the building of hotels and investment in the city . This new found raison d’être for Porto continues to this day with the building of a new metro line and building renovation going on whenever one looks. Julio is immensely proud of his city and quite rightly so. We would want to return to Porto again in 5 years by which time the current construction will be done. By then it will surely rival any similarly sized tourist city in Europe. Julio’s English is excellent. His intellect is outstanding as would befit his training as a psychologist. Julio should be your choice of guide !
