Family Fun and Adventure: Discovering Portugal’s Hidden Gems
Eager to explore the wonders of Portugal with my kids, I embarked on the Aveiro, Paiva Walkways, and Suspension Bridge adventure. This family-friendly journey promised a blend of excitement and relaxation, perfect for creating lasting memories.
A Morning of Adventure and Awe
Our day began bright and early, as we set off from Porto towards the charming town of Arouca. As a family travel writer, I always look for experiences that are both exciting and manageable for kids, and this adventure promised just that. The early start was a bit challenging, especially since Porto was still waking up, and breakfast options were limited. However, a quick stop before reaching the suspension bridge allowed us to grab a quick bite and a much-needed coffee.
The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly crossing the 516-meter-long suspension bridge. Spanning across the valley, it offered breathtaking views of the Paiva River below. My kids were thrilled by the sheer height and the gentle sway of the bridge, making it an exhilarating experience for all of us. The exclusive time slot meant we had the bridge to ourselves, allowing us to take in the scenery at our own pace.
Walking the Paiva Walkways
After the thrill of the suspension bridge, we embarked on the Paiva Walkways, a 5km downhill trail that zig-zags along the river. The wooden boardwalk made it easy for my kids to navigate, and the gentle downhill slope ensured it was not too strenuous for little legs. The walk was a perfect blend of nature and adventure, with the lush greenery and the sound of the river providing a serene backdrop.
Lunch was a delightful affair at a local family-owned restaurant. The options were simple yet delicious, with choices like pork, sardines, and a vegetarian omelet. My kids enjoyed the fries and rice, while I savored the local green wine. It was a no-frills meal that perfectly captured the essence of Portuguese hospitality.
Exploring Costa Nova and Aveiro
Post-lunch, we made a quick stop at Costa Nova, known for its picturesque striped houses. While the colorful facades were indeed “Insta-worthy,” I found myself wishing for more time in Aveiro. Known as the “Portuguese Venice,” Aveiro’s canals and charming city center were a delight to explore.
We had about 90 minutes to wander through Aveiro, and I took the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely boat trip through the canals. It was a relaxing way to end the day, and my kids loved spotting the various boats and bridges along the way. The free time allowed us to explore at our own pace, making it a stress-free experience for the whole family.
Overall, the Aveiro Adventure was a fantastic day out, filled with adventure, culture, and relaxation. The small group size made it a comfortable experience, and our guide was both informative and considerate of our needs. I highly recommend this trip for families looking to explore the beauty of Portugal in a fun and engaging way.
