Highlights
  • Your knowledgeable tour guide will pick you up at your hotel or designated meeting point and transport you to Amarante, the first destination of our journey.
Enroute to the Douro Region, your guide will share informative anecdotes about Portuguese history, progress, and cultural aspects of Portugal’s heritage.
  • Amarante, our initial point of visit!
Travelers are sure to be captivated by two prominent natural phenomena: the towering Serra do Marão presiding over the city in an array of majestic landscapes, and the river Tâmega, the longest tributary of the river Douro. Its journey originating in Galicia, it runs through the core of Amarante, painting a beautiful picture with the quaint houses dotting its banks.

Legend has it that this city, which forms a bridge between the provinces of Minho and Trás-os-Montes, was established by a Roman centurion named Amarantus. In the 13th century, St Gonçalo, a Benedictine monk and revered saint, took residence here after a pilgrimage to Italy and Jerusalem, eventually becoming the city’s patron saint. He is credited with the construction of a robust bridge over the Tâmega, exactly where the current one stands.
Amarante’s fine pastries and desserts are famed and conveniently available in the region’s patisseries and cafes. Make a note of these specialties and ensure to sample them: papos de anjo, brisas do Tâmega, toucinho do céu, bolos de São Gonçalo, galhofas.

  • Our next stop takes us about 640 meters high.
The picturesque São Leonardo da Galafura Viewpoint, nestled between Vila Real and Peso da Régua, offers splendid vistas of the stunning Douro River and embraces the grandeur of the ancient and historical region of Trás-os-Montes.
Here you’ll enjoy panoramic views with the Douro River standing out, edged by steep terrains that house the vineyards responsible for the renowned Douro wine, creating wonderful vistas.
  • Now, let’s savor lunch!
Your guide will escort you to a local restaurant to indulge in a mouth-watering traditional Portuguese feast, inclusive of drinks.
Relish traditional Portuguese cuisine paired with local Douro table wine.
(Do specify your preference for a vegetarian option when booking)
  • We traverse the N222 route, hailed as the world’s most beautiful road, escorting us along the southern coast of the Douro River. This route provides miles of pleasure, fascination, and stunning landscapes, as it winds into the core of the Douro Wine Region.
  • Next, we embark on a picturesque rabelo boat journey, flanked by terraces containing the vineyards that cultivate the globally acclaimed Port wine.
The view from the river of the vineyards and wineries on either bank is a truly unique experience.
  • To wrap up the day, we tour a vineyard estate nestled in the Douro Valley for a real vineyard experience.
Uncover the secrets of vine cultivation on a guided walk through the estate, pausing at interesting spots and drinking in the glorious vineyard landscapes.
Before we head back to Porto, the guided tour culminates in an unforgettable wine tasting experience where you can savor various wines.
