Highlights
  • Amarante - Two impressive natural features will undoubtedly leave an impression on all visitors to Amarante: the great Serra do Marão rising above the city in a series of majestic landscapes, and the river Tâmega, the longest tributary of the Douro, whose journey begins in Galicia and which flows through the center of Amarante, adding additional color to the picturesque houses seated on its banks. We cannot simply pass through this beautiful land without making a small stop, stretch our legs, taste one of the most daring delicacies enjoying the crystal clear river and its bridge which links the two banks in the same location as the crude bridge built by S.Gonçalo to permit the passage of pilgrims, who wanted to reach the bridge as well as the Convent, all of them dating back to the 18th century. To reach this destination will take us approximately 50 minutes.

Additional Information

The wine region of Upper Douro is acknowledged as a World Heritage site by UNESCO due to its unique and stunning landscape.

A visit to this beautiful place is justified for many reasons, but primarily for the opportunity to explore the birthplace of celebrated wines. The Douro Valleys with its terraces is where this precious liquid, dubbed Port Wine in recognition of the 17th century, flourishes and matures.

Douro, being the world’s first wine region to have clear demarcation and regulations, is divided into Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Upper Douro, each unique in its own topography and climate.

To experience the breathtaking scenery, one can follow the Douro River Course. During the harvest season, visitors can take part in the grape harvest and tasks at the ‘Lagares’ (Mills) in the various farms scattered in the region.
