One Day in the Douro River Valley - We knew from the start that my husband and I were going to have a wonderful day exploring the Douro River Valley together with Anselmo. After an online consultation prior to our arrival, Anselmo tailored an off-the-beaten-path tour to address our historical, cultural and wine interests. He drove us through less-traveled scenic areas (we viewed the valley from both sides of the river!), provided insights to port wine making, treated us with local coffee and pastries at one of our stops, organized port and wine tastings, prearranged lunch at a vineyard overlooking the river valley, and capped off the sunny afternoon at a rustic vineyard as we toasted (with outstanding port) a fabulous day. The entire tour was one long conversation among the three of us. Anselmo is warm, friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. (And he managed many curvy roads with skill!) We recommend without reservation hiring Anselmo to explore the history of Porto and to celebrate the riches of the Douro River Valley.

We highly recommend his tours that introduce and celebrate the best of Porto and its region.

Fun tour on a rainy day - Anselmo was friendly, knowledgeable, adaptable, and a great driver. We booked this tour during the rainiest possible time. The weather was simply awful. When our boat tour was impossible due to the river conditions, he pivoted and gave us a small tour of Pinhao. When we couldn't get into the typical lunch spot he chooses, he identified another. When we arrived at a vineyard as another group was receiving a tour, he stepped back and let the other tour guide lead, and when we wanted to add wines to our tasting, he was very flexible on time. I highly recommend working with him. He'll go above and beyond to make sure you have a lovely tour.

Unforgettable Private Tour of the Douro Valley - Our private tour of the Douro Valley was truly the highlight of our trip to Porto. From start to finish, the experience felt personal, relaxed, and beautifully curated. Our guide, Anselmo, was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the region’s history and wine culture but also warm, engaging, and attentive to what we wanted to see and learn.
The drive through the valley was breathtaking—rolling vineyards, terraced hills, and stunning views at every turn. We started our day at a local coffee shop in Galafura sampling some pastel de natas and farmers port. Then we visited Quinta doVal Moreria enjoying a variety of their wines and olive oil after a behind-the-scenes tour into traditional winemaking. The intimate setting made the experience feel authentic and far from the crowds.
Next we stopped for lunch at Michelin star restaurant Seixo by Vasco Coelho Santos which was truly one of the most delicious meals of our trip. We ended our meal with some Port from Quinta do Seixo - Sandeman overlooking the breathtaking sights.
To top it all off, we got a bonus add on to try some Vino Verde at a local shop in Fânzeres with a wonderful tapas spread and chocolate mousse.
If you’re visiting Porto and want a day that blends culture, scenery, wine, and genuine hospitality, I can’t recommend this private Douro Valley tour enough. It was unforgettable in every way. 🍷

Duoro Valley Private Tour - We did the tour in early Oct and had a great time. Anselmo was a very friendly, approachable guide. Weather was foggy and wet on the Porto side, but luckily clear and sunny on the Duomo valley side. Went to the Miraduoro Sao Leonardo where there were amazing views. Then went for lunch at a beautiful winery and another place for Port tasting. Great day out.

Fantastic Day in the Douro Valley - We will remember this day and tour always. The Douro Valley has graceful and varied beauty as far as the eye can see. This tour makes visiting there a joy and just very memorable. Anselmo is a warm, attentive, knowledgeable and interesting host and guide. He quickly and intuitively reads what will make the best experience for his individual guests and adapts the day to their needs. For us, this led to a truly magical day where we enjoyed every individual part of our trip; from less traveled gorgeous routes leading to gems of scenic vistas, to the perfect wine spots for our tastes, a curated and private lunch with panoramic views, a vineyard that took our breath away, and endless laughs throughout the day. We just had the best day possible, with an added surprise at the end of our day of a local authentic tapas meal we will never forget.
Thank you Anselmo! I will be bringing every friend and family member I visit Porto with in the future on your tour. 🌼

Unforgettable Day in the Douro Valley! - Where do I begin?!!
I wish I could adequately grasp the joy and magic of our day in the Douro Valley with our guide Anselmo. There are no words. The experience (no exaggeration) was one of the highlighted days of my life, which says a lot for a 60 year old, very well travelled woman! My friend and I decided on a private tour and, trust me, you will never look back on the slightly extra cost in order to have a highly personalized and unforgettable day. Anselmo gets to know you as people and travelers, paying attention to details and going the extra mile (no pun intended) to make the day special. His knowledge of the valley, wine production/tasting and his easy going personality made us all feel like good friends by the end of the day. He shared off the beaten path spots, that truly took our breath away- making time for pictures, laughs and yes, a few tears… spoiler alert: that view got me to my core. We appreciated the option to go to a second winery and opt out of the boat ride…what a gift! Lunch was a delicious meal with unmatched views and excellent wine pairings (evidently I am now a fan of “green wine” - you’ll have to book him to find out why!) Anselmo is a true gem in the world of many tour guides- highly highly recommend!

Wine Adventures alone the Douro - We found Anselmo through Withlocals listings for a wine tour of the Douro Valley, starting from Porto, Portugal. The tour was scheduled for 6 hours. Because we were three couples, we paid 200euros extra for an XL SUV so we could be together for our tour. Anselmo (#DuckSideOfPorto) was well informed not only about the wines, but the roads, having mountain-biked them many times. We stopped in a village for “farmers port” and a wonderful panorama of the Douro River. We traveled small roads through the steep North bank eventually coming to Croft Quinta da Roeda called noisy because of a rapid nearby before the river was tamed with a dam. We sampled several styles of port, before continuing to lunch at Quinta do Val Moreira. This wonderfully sited resort high on the South bank, vintifies grapes grown on the property. These white and red table wines went well with the meal we enjoyed. We also sampled their port wines in their cave before returning to our hotel. Anselmo was considerate of our needs, listened to the wines we wanted to try and was adventurous in where we went. We enjoyed our day within immensely and think you will too

An exceptional tour of a stunning place - We had an exceptional experience with Anselmo. The day was perfectly curated with stops for stunning photos at miradouros, a scenic boat ride, an informative and beautiful visit to a Quinta’s vineyard with port tastings and a fabulous three course lunch paired with wine and port at another stunning quinta overlooking the Douro. Anselmo is very knowledgeable about all aspects of the Douro and he told us important facts and stories along the way. Even more noteworthy however was Anselmo’s thoughtfulness- he brought and held an umbrella for us in the rain, took pictures for us and even brought gluten free Pasteis for my husband so he could experience this pairing with port. It was as if you spent a day with family friend. We cannot more highly recommend this tour with Anselmo!
