- University of Coimbra - The visit begins at the university, founded in the 13th century and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, along with Rua da Sofia and the upper city. Climbing its tower, which houses the bells marking class times, offers a stunning 360º view of Coimbra. Ground-level attractions include the Pátio das Escolas courtyard, the Sala dos Capelos hall for important ceremonies, the Chapel of São Miguel with its grand Baroque organ, and the Joanine Library, home to over 300,000 works from the 16th to 18th centuries in ornate gilt-covered bookcases. These buildings stand on the site of the Palace where Portugal’s first kings resided when Coimbra was the kingdom’s capital. Admission to the university and library is not included.
- Coimbra - Situated on the banks of the Mondego River, Coimbra is renowned for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of Europe’s oldest, earning it the title “the city of students.” Numerous monuments from that era showcase the grandeur of Romanesque art. In the shopping district and historic café area of the City Centre, visitors should not miss the Monastery of Santa Cruz, housing the tomb of Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, and across the river, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, restored from the river’s encroaching waters over centuries. The Sé Velha (Old Cathedral) is also notable, where the monumental serenade occurs, with students in black capes singing Coimbra Fado with heartfelt emotion. This is part of the Queima das Fitas (Burning of the Ribbons) ritual every May, celebrating newly graduated students with a vibrant party. This lively spirit is present year-round in the many pubs, restaurants, and “Repúblicas” (student residences), exemplifying community life.
- Aveiro - In the afternoon, the tour continues to Aveiro, located by the sea and the ria (estuary), featuring a network of canals navigated by moliceiros (local boats). These slender, colorful boats, once used for collecting algae and seaweed, now offer sightseeing trips.
- Ria de Aveiro - Cruise through Aveiro’s stunning canals on a classic Moliceiro (traditional boat). Relax and enjoy the scenery on this traditional vessel, once used for gathering seagrass in the lagoon.
- Costa Nova - The final stop is Costa Nova do Prado beach, commonly known as Costa Nova. The most charming feature of Costa Nova is its coastal road lined with wooden huts painted in vibrant stripes alternating with white. Originally built by fishermen as shelters and equipment stores, these huts have been transformed into distinctive holiday homes.
