Porto - Welcome to Porto!
In the Porto and North regions, Portugal was established in the 12th century, marking the beginning of the Portuguese nation and its people.
Porto, a city recognized as a World Heritage site, serves as the gateway to exploring the region’s rich natural and cultural diversity. It is renowned for Port wine, which is exported globally, and its heritage that blends ancient churches and monuments, like the Cathedral and the Church of São Francisco, with modern structures such as Casa da Música and the Serralves Museum. The city is also famous for its School of Architecture, which produced notable figures like Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura, both Pritzker Prize laureates.

Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral) - Porto Cathedral, along with the city’s first defensive walls, was established in the 12th century by its first bishop, D. Hugo. The cathedral is also known as the Church of Santa Maria do Porto, Nossa Senhora do Porto da Eterna Salvação, or Nossa Senhora da Vandoma, highlighting the significance of the Marian cult.
Our guide will introduce you to the history of Porto and Portugal, explaining the architecture of the building from the outside and offering stunning views of the river and the wine cellars in Gaia. - Sao Bento Railway Station - The S. Bento Railway Station was constructed at the start of the 20th century on the site of the former Convent of S. Bento de Avé-Maria. The glass and iron structure was designed by architect Marques da Silva. The vestibule is adorned with twenty thousand tiles painted by Jorge Colaço, depicting the evolution of transport and events in Portuguese history and life. Our guide will explain the Portuguese history illustrated on these tiles.

Porto - The Historic Centre of Porto, the city’s oldest area and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, includes the civil parishes of Sé, Vitória, São Nicolau, and Miragaia (including the Porto Wine Lodges). Dating back to medieval times, the Historic Centre of Porto retains its unique urban characteristics, distinct from other European cities.
We will now take you on a panoramic tour through the typical streets of this part of the city, where you’ll observe various monuments of immense cultural wealth and value, as if time had stood still in the Middle Ages! - Livraria Lello - The building housing the library was inaugurated in 1906. Its beautiful Art Nouveau façade with neo-Gothic details is noteworthy. Inside, the library is decorated with painted plaster imitating wood and features a magnificent staircase connecting it to the upper floor - one of Porto’s first reinforced concrete works.
- Torre dos Clerigos - A genuine baroque masterpiece by Nicolau Nasoni, an iconic monument of Porto.
The Church of Clérigos is a true baroque masterpiece from the mid-18th century, designed by Nicolau Nasoni, an architect of Italian origin. He left his mark on many monuments in Porto and northern Portugal. Nasoni, at his request, was buried here in a small chapel with its entrance at the same level as the top of the double bolster stairway.
- Vila Nova de Gaia - Now it’s time to explore the Port Wine Lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Port wine originates in the Douro River valley, but it is near the city that gave it its name that it matures and acquires the distinctive flavor that makes it unique.
The river has always been used to transport wine barrels to the quays of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the lodges are located, and where the wine ages before being marketed worldwide.
You will enjoy a guided visit to a renowned Port Wine Lodge in Gaia, learning about the history and production process of this exceptional wine.
To conclude the morning part of the tour and whet your appetite for lunch, you will have the opportunity to taste and sample different Port Wines.
Please note that this part of the tour is shared with other participants.

If you selected the lunch option, the guide will take you to a traditional restaurant for a complete lunch with drinks included, where you can choose one of the most traditional recipes, the famous “francesinha.”
If you did not choose the lunch option, you will have free time to have lunch on your own. -
Cais da Ribeira - After lunch, grab your camera, relax, and enjoy the views of Porto and Gaia from the Douro River.
On board a traditional “Rebelo” boat, you will sail through the six bridges that cross the river into Porto. - Promenade Foz do Douro - To fully experience Porto and its history, you must visit Foz do Douro. Facing the Atlantic, you’ll be captivated by the incredible quality of life and the romantic walks where the sun and sea merge into one spectacular climax every evening.
These beaches proudly display the blue flag eco-label, indicating high-quality, unpolluted seawater. Take a stroll under the “Pergola da Foz,” built in the 1930s. As the story goes, the Mayor of Porto’s wife at the time was so enchanted by the pergola of the “Promenade des Anglais” in Nice, France, that she insisted on having the same in Porto. Here it is called “Praia dos Ingleses,” a reminder of the close relationship between the English (and other British citizens) and Portugal.
- Casa da Musica - One of Porto’s premier cultural venues, designed by architect Rem Koolhaas.
In the Rotunda da Boavista roundabout, halfway between the historic center and the Foz area, stands a large-scale, daringly original building that is sure to capture anyone’s attention: the Casa da Música or “House of Music.” The building was designed by the renowned Dutch architect and urbanist, Rem Koolhaas, and was conceived to support an innovative cultural project for Porto 2001-European Capital of Culture.
-
Boavista - We’ll conclude our tour by exploring the modern part of the city. The Boavista area, featuring the impressive Casa da Musica building, the largest avenue named after the area, and the city park.
