Maragogi, a name derived from the ancient Tupi language meaning ‘river of the cats of the bush’, was named thus due to the river flowing through the town. This municipality is situated in the state of Alagoas, within the region of Maceió.

As a popular tourist destination within the state, Maragogi is particularly famous for its attractive beaches namely Peroba, São Bento, Barra Grande and Burgalhau.
