The municipality is prominent in the production of sugar cane and tourism. Its border is formed by the beaches: Tamandaré, Barra, Pontal do Lira, Campas and dos Carneiros. Praia dos Carneiros is among the 15 most beautiful beaches in the world.
Another tourist spot is the Forte de Santo Inácio located near Praia de Tamandaré, built in the 17th century.
