Great & Ghastly fun - Caitlin was engaging, entertaining, and knowledgeable. On top of all of that she was very personable. I recommend the ghost tour and we’ll definitely be attending again next time we are in Portland. Staff at the old town pizza were helpful and very nice as well! Go early and order some pizza before the tour!

Best Haunted Tour in Portland - Awesome tour of one of the most haunted places in Portland. Our tour guide, Mr. Doug, was the best! So informative and very funny with plenty of ghastly tales to tell about the Shanghai Tunnels. If you love history, the supernatural, and of course some great beer and pizza, then this is the tour for you! 👻🍻

Highly recommended! - Doug was absolutely the highlight of the Haunted Underground Shanghai Tunnel Tour with Brewery Tastings. He may be “seasoned,” but don’t let that fool you; his eyes still light up when he tells a spooky Shanghai Tunnel legend. There’s something delightfully endearing about an older fellow who’s both cute and crackling with enthusiasm, and Doug wears that charm like a badge of honor. From the moment we descended into those dimly lit passageways, Doug’s deep well of historical knowledge had everyone leaning in. He wove fascinating facts about Portland’s Prohibition past with tales of Shanghai Tunnel folklore, pausing just often enough to let the next brewery tasting arrive. Each stop felt personalized; Doug somehow remembered every name in our group, tossed out witty one-liners, and kept us laughing even when the ghost stories got a little eerie. By the end of the night, we’d tasted local IPAs, sipped barrel-aged stouts, and felt like honorary historians ourselves; all thanks to Doug’s perfect blend of warmth, humor, and expertise. If you’re looking for a tour guide who’s equal parts adorable grandpa and spook-story aficionado, you absolutely can’t go wrong with Doug. Highly recommended!

Spooky underground tour - Cool and spooky experience. Be careful though if you have issues bending or walking. The ground is very uneven and you have to go under some pipes. It’s a sad part of Portland's history. But an important one to learn about.

The tunnels are dark but... - The tunnels are dark but very fun. The beer at the end topped off the night. Old Town Pizza is very good too.

Knowledgeable tour guide but overall disappointment - The tour guide was very good, but the tour itself was disappointing. This is basically walking around underneath one block of Portland in very dimly lit spaces. There are very few artifacts and the beer tasting consists of two small cups of beer poured from cans at an underground bar.

Not Quite the Depth We Expected – More Basement Than Shanghai - We were excited to explore the infamous Shanghai Tunnels and wrap up the night with a local brew tasting—but the experience fell short of expectations. While the guide brought energy and personality, the “tour” mostly consisted of standing in a single basement space while listening to stories that sometimes lacked focus or depth. We were hoping for more walking, more history, and more of an immersive experience underground. As for the brew tasting, it felt like an afterthought—just a couple small pours and a single can of beer. If you’re looking for a historical deep dive or a legit tasting experience, you may want to keep looking. That said, if you go in with very casual expectations, you might still find it mildly entertaining for the novelty.

In Grandma’s Basement with a Millennial Drama Major - Let me set the scene: the tour begins with the tantalizing smell of pizza wafting through the air — a promising start. But that was the high point. The pizza was not part of the tour. I couldn’t even buy a slice. And the slices I did see? Generic. Like, gas station adjacent. From there, we descended into what was basically a damp crawlspace under one block of Portland. We saw a water meter. Yes, a literal water meter. We crept past Xfinity cables, an old organ that may or may not have belonged to Sam, and the pièce de résistance: a fire suppression system. Spooky stuff. Our tour guide? Picture a theater major who just discovered TikTok monologues. She screamed at odd intervals, switched the lights on and off like a strobe rave, and delivered a story that may have been about a mother and daughter ghost… or maybe kidnapped lumberjacks? It was like being trapped inside someone’s improv final. At one point during the tour, I genuinely thought it was all a setup — that I was about to get lumberjacked, handed an opium-laced beer, and tossed down a shaft to wake up on a ship bound for Shanghai, paid 50 shillings to work off my confusion for the next three years. She hyped a beer tasting all night long, so we stuck it out. And by “tasting,” I mean she pulled warm cans of beer out of her backpack and poured them into plastic shot cups. Where was the brewery? No napkins, no explanation — just lukewarm regret. The best part? Scaring other people by pretending to be a ghost in the dark corners of Grandma’s unfinished basement. If you’ve ever wanted to relive a childhood memory of exploring a moldy crawlspace but with strangers and the faint threat of botulism, this tour’s for you. Also, if you enjoy not knowing who touched you in a dark hallway, absolutely book it.

Just a basement and a theatrical lady - not recommend - Terrible! The lady guiding the tour was theatrical and didn’t know any facts kept saying she could tell us the facts later or if we asked her and then move on or run away as a joke? Then the listing said you’d have 3 tasters and a pint and they only gave 2 tasters and said they “weren’t a basket robins” when we asked for another sample when selecting our second pint of beer. Overall a HUGE waste of time and money. I would pay to not go on this tour of an old pizza basement.
