Rediscovering the Scenic Wonders of the Columbia River Gorge

Drawn by the allure of the Columbia River Gorge, I embarked on a journey to rediscover the scenic wonders of this historic highway. Join me as I reflect on the beauty and history of the Gorge, sharing the experience with my daughter and uncovering hidden gems along the way.

A Journey Through Time on the Columbia River Highway

As we set off on the Columbia River Highway, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. This road, the first scenic highway built in America, was a testament to the spirit of exploration that has always been a part of our national identity. Our guide, Brittany, was a delightful companion, sharing stories of the highway’s history and the people who once traveled it in their Model T cars. Her knowledge and passion for the area were infectious, and I found myself transported back to the days of my youth, when my family and I would embark on road trips across the country, discovering the hidden gems of America.

The highway itself is a marvel, winding through the lush, rainforested landscape of the Gorge. As we drove, the Sandy River paralleled our path, its waters glistening in the sunlight. Brittany pointed out the river’s significance, explaining how its dams had been removed to restore the natural flow and support the thriving populations of Steelhead and Chinook. It was a reminder of the delicate balance between progress and preservation, a theme that resonated deeply with me as I reflected on the changes I’ve witnessed over the years.

Waterfalls and Wonders: Discovering “Waterfall Alley”

Our first stop was the Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint, where we were greeted with a breathtaking panorama of the Gorge. The view was nothing short of spectacular, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment with my camera. From there, we continued to Vista House, a century-old marvel perched atop a basalt point. The building itself was a work of art, with its sandstone, limestone, and marble construction, and the 360-degree balcony offered unparalleled views of the Columbia River below.

As we ventured further into “Waterfall Alley,” I was reminded of the countless waterfalls my family and I had discovered on our travels. Each one was unique, with its own story to tell. Latourell Falls, with its vibrant lichen and columnar basalt, was a sight to behold, while the hidden cove of Shepperd’s Dell offered a serene escape from the world. At Bridal Veil Falls State Park, I was transported back in time to the days of the old logging ghost town, imagining the lives of those who once called it home.

The highlight of our journey was undoubtedly Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in the state. Standing at the base of the falls, I was in awe of its sheer power and beauty. It was a moment of reflection, a reminder of the natural wonders that continue to inspire and captivate us. My daughter, who was experiencing the Gorge for the first time, was equally enchanted, and I felt a sense of joy in sharing this experience with her.

Hidden Gems and Local Lore

As we continued our journey, Brittany shared stories of the area’s rich history and local lore. At Oneonta Gorge, we marveled at the unique plants growing on the canyon walls, a testament to the resilience of nature. The quirky Horsetail Falls provided a lighthearted moment, as we snapped photos and laughed at its unusual shape.

Passing by Beacon Rock, we learned of its significance as the fifth-largest free-standing monolith in the world. It was a humbling sight, a reminder of the geological forces that have shaped this landscape over millennia. Rooster Rock State Park, with its intriguing history as the site of North America’s oldest continuously running nudist beach, added a touch of whimsy to our adventure.

As our tour came to an end, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable region. The Columbia River Gorge is a place of unparalleled beauty and history, a testament to the enduring spirit of the American road trip. It was a journey that not only rekindled my love for the open road but also allowed me to share that passion with my daughter, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Columbia River Gorge Tour
