Highlights
  • Bissell Brothers Brewing Company - Bissell Brothers was founded in December 2013 by brothers Noah and Peter Bissell, along with Noah’s college friend Seth. Their original brewery was located at the now-famous One Industrial Way.

Their first release was The Substance, a hoppy American Pale Ale that was first released in cans in January 2014 and immediately created massive demand from beer lovers.

Since those early days, they have increased their production by at least 200% a year which resulted in the 2016 move of the entire brewery to Thompson’s Point in Portland.

They now brew in a revitalized space 10 times the size of their old brewery that was built in 1904 and once served as a railcar repair location for the Maine Central Railroad.

They received a larger brewhouse during 2017 and sent their original system north to begin brewing for their second location in their hometown of Milo, Maine.

A wonderful tour - We enjoyed one of their tours in 2015 and since we were going to be in Portland again, we decided to try another. Our guides, Tom and Joe, were great. They were very knowledgeable about the breweries we visited and brewers at each site. Tom has clearly been doing this for a while and has built relationships with the staff at locations we visited. We were fortunate to have a small group on our morning tour which made for an even more personal experience. We started at Bissell Brothers before they opened so it was nice and quiet in there. The next two stops were at Belleflower and Goodfire. They are smaller breweries with very enjoyable beers to offer and wonderful staff.

DA BEST Beerunch Brewery Bus Tour - Super knowledgeable and fun! Joe and Spencer were fantastic hosts. Even for 10am, they had the perfect approach and tone for folks who might not identify as "morning people," or were perhaps hungover.

Great beer, great history, great company! - Tom and Chad are wonderful hosts and know a lot about the history of the area as well as the brewing process. I was unfortunately ill on the morning of my tour, but the three others in my party were able to attend and they still talk about how awesome this tour was. When I met up with my party later in the day, we caught up with Tom and Chad when they were touring an afternoon group at Shipyard Brewery. Tom is such a gentleman, he pulled me aside so I could tour with the second group because I hadn't been able to with my group. Very grateful to Tom for that, and I regret being too ill to attend during my tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Portland, ME.

Excellent tour with excellent guides - We did the brewery tour at lunch time, visiting 3 breweries in about 3 hours, all were relatively close by so not a lot of driving. Our tour guide Shea was awesome, super informative, very knowledgeable. You don’t have to be a beer nerd to enjoy the tour, we weren’t very versed going in but came out with a lot more knowledge and more appreciative of what we were drinking. Will definitely try other tours the next time in Portland.
