Additional Information

Follow the course of history by tracing the paths of the African-Americans in Portland who advanced the city, the state, and the nation towards the principles of independence, democracy, liberty, and fairness. Black prowess and knowledge played a significant role in Maine’s initial settlements. During this journey, you’ll encounter the stories of African-American Yankees who laid the foundation of Maine, abolished slavery regionally, propelled our seafaring industries, accrued political power, defied racial barriers, and broadened the rights of Mainers in contemporary times.

Strolling on time-worn granite cobblestones — once trodden by national icons such as Frederick Douglass — you’ll traverse past shops which once housed African-American-owned barber establishments, where anti-slavery activists discreetly shared information with operators of the Underground Railroad.

With a duration of 2 hours, you will be engaged in 1.5 miles of fascinating historical narration. Owner and guide, Dugan Murphy, meticulously researched the archives to curate a series of amazing tales usually sidestepped in conventional tours. TripAdvisor has lauded him as Portland’s foremost guide!

Who knew???? - Where do I start????? Dugan was TRULY AMAZING!!! He was so knowledgeable and passionate about the Black Experience in Portland, I truly had no idea. I kept asking him to repeat himself.. I was taking ssssoooo many notes!!!!! 😂😂 I should have recorded him.. he was EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Smart!!! He has truly done his research. He was dropping so much history, I felt as though I needed to research more history of the Black Experience in the north. No matter what part of the world we are in, you will always find Black History. The gems Dugan was dropping from the past are still relevant today!!! Thank you for seeing us!🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎. Taking his time to show the relevance of the Black Experience meant a lot to my sweetie and I. Thank you Dugan!!!!! We will be back!!! By the way… The Highroller… Good Choice!!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Loved Portland by the Foot's Black History Tour! - We loved this tour! Unlike another walking tour we did in Boston, Dugan hasn't just memorized facts, but he is PASSIONATE about the history of Portland, and specifically about the Black history of Portland. During our tour, one of the other couples who joined had information on a gentleman not often mentioned in the history books, but who Dugan has been collecting information about. It was so much fun watching a true historian corroborate information and collect new facts with such pure joy. The tour proved to be a great introduction to the city, while also teaching us about the many significant contributions (and suffering) by the Black residents of Portland over the past few centuries. Dugan is witty, kind, and crazy smart. For those who might be wary that a "Black history" tour might get political, Dugan just stuck to the facts - there was nothing in the tour that was divisive. It would be a great way to spend the day as a family (probably tweens and older would have a great time), even if everyone doesn't see eye to eye on our polarized political discussions. We HIGHLY recommend doing one of Portland by the Foot's tours - It was truly eye-opening and entertaining at the same time!

Fabulous Black History Tour - We really enjoyed our Black History Tour on our recent visit to Portland. Having never been to the city, or Maine, it was a great way to get an historical overview of the city’s important African American figures and cultural heritage. Dugan really knows his stuff. He made it fun & informative, full of tidbits of background info not commonly known, and presenting these stories with humor and style. Having become big Dugan fans, we HIGHLY recommend touring with him if you have the chance. And, ask where to find a great Italian sandwich—it was delicious!

To make America great again, remember that it didn't become great without the sacrifice of immigrants! - Amazing and informative! Dugan was probably as excited as we were to relive our ancestral history. The wealth of knowledge and legacies are still thriving today! Dugan had great backstories and even live testimonies from family members. I'd definitely do the tour again!

Must Do Tour - This is a must do experience for everyone! We visited locations and Dugan was able to tell us history that took place at those sites. We knew Black people had a hand in Portland’s history, but we were impressed with all the details and story telling Dugan imparted. Thank you Dugan for your willingness to tell this history!

A must for all! - This tour was exceptional! And never too late to learn and appreciate how much history I have missed. First thing after the tour, I had to read about “the mother of the Pell Grant”! And refresh what I knew about her daughter! Thank you Dugan for a fascinating tour. Every city should have a tour about the wonderful contributions of its citizens, especially if they have never been mentioned before. You won’t lean this in school or in college. Someone, in this case Dugan, has taken the time to researched and dig deep into the past of Portland and all its citizens, visitors, the people who came to look for a better life or the people who helped others find freedom and a new life. Absolutely fantastic and I will now focus on trying to be more informed. Portland, Maine, or America, have always been a mixture of many nationalities, cultures, people, races and all should be acknowledged. You did an awesome job and I will not forget this tour!

New information for old Mainers - Being over seven generation white Mainers back for a visit after retirement, we took a chance on this tour and are very glad we did! The preparation Dugan did showed in his ability to organize the telling of history in a way which has something for anyone. It is just over 7,000 steps, if you are counting, and the resting stops are well spaced.

Connecting lives and making them relevant and exciting… - With some preparation beforehand, including a visit to Calvary Cemetery in South Portland on the suggestion by Duggar, to the monument/grave of Father Healy, the rest of the day was filled with an easy walk through wonderful Portland imagining the city of yesterday when its citizens, many black, maneuvered its streets, wharfs and waters to pursue a livelihood or move the needle of civil rights in a more positive direction. Dugan’s knowledge and anecdotal approach to conveying history was entertaining and informative. What was special was his relating his own research had connected one of Portland’s black ministers to the wider Underground Railroad, leading his research to Detroit, and on to Canada, ending in Liberia. He could have a book, or an episodic streaming show that would excite its viewers based on the information he presented. Well done!!
