A Journey Through Arrábida’s Natural Beauty

Our adventure began with a scenic drive across the 25th of April Bridge, a sight that never fails to captivate with its sweeping views of Lisbon. As we made our way towards Azeitão, the anticipation of exploring the Arrábida Nature Park was palpable. The kids were excited, their eyes wide with wonder as the lush greenery of the park came into view.

Arrábida Nature Park is a treasure trove of natural beauty, with its chalk cliffs and verdant mountains. We took a leisurely stroll along the trails, the kids collecting leaves and pebbles as souvenirs. The highlight was undoubtedly the panoramic view from the Serra do Risco, the highest peak along the Portuguese mainland coast. Standing there, with the Atlantic stretching out before us, was a moment of pure magic.

The beaches of Arrábida, with their fine sand and crystal-clear waters, were a delight. We spent some time at Portinho da Arrábida, where the kids splashed in the gentle waves while I soaked in the sun. It’s a perfect spot for families, offering both relaxation and adventure.

A Taste of Tradition at José Maria da Fonseca

Our next stop was the José Maria da Fonseca winery, a place steeped in history and tradition. The kids were fascinated by the old wine cellars, and the tour guide did a fantastic job of engaging them with stories of the winery’s past.

The highlight for me was the wine tasting. While the kids enjoyed some grape juice, I savored the rich flavors of the Setúbal Muscatels. The winery’s gardens provided a lovely backdrop for a family picnic, where we enjoyed some local cheese and bread.

Visiting the winery was not only a treat for the taste buds but also an educational experience for the kids. They learned about the winemaking process and the importance of preserving traditions, a lesson that resonated with them long after we left.

Exploring History at Palmela Castle

Our journey continued to Palmela, where we explored the historic Palmela Castle. The kids were thrilled to roam the ancient walls, imagining themselves as knights and princesses. The castle offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, a perfect spot for a family photo.

We took a moment to relax and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the castle grounds. The kids played in the open spaces, their laughter echoing off the stone walls. It was a reminder of the simple joys of travel, the moments that create lasting memories.

As we crossed the Vasco da Gama Bridge on our way back, the sun setting over the Tejo River, I reflected on our day. The Arrábida Nature Park and José Maria da Fonseca winery had offered us a perfect blend of nature, culture, and history. It was a day filled with discovery and delight, a reminder of the beauty of family travel.
