Amazing and Detailed Driving Tour - Our other tour was canceled, so we downloaded this app (it’s free, but they request donations). This was an amazing, detailed driving tour that starts in Port Royal. I majored in American history in college, and even took a whole class in The Civil War, but I learned so much on this tour. The Reconstruction Era National Historical Park is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so we couldn’t access the visitor center and buildings, but it didn’t really matter. The tour took us to some great spots, and told some wonderful stories. My favorite was about Robert Smalls, an enslaved man born in Beaufort, who ended up stealing an entire ship from Charleston Harbor and presenting it to the US Army, freeing his family in the process. It is an amazing account. Apparently, because Beaufort fell to the Union Army so early, this area became a lesson on how to integrate freed slaves into freedom. So much history here, and the app is amazing.

Excellent way to learn about the most important history! - This is such an informative well researched tour. It covers the story of a young man’s ancestors back to the Port Royal Experiment. Darius Brown is our current hero who at the age of 22 is trying to reclaim the history of his ancestors during the emancipation era. He states that he is not solely interested in monetary reparations, but to honorably validate the history of his ancestors. I highly recommend this tour. We learned so much. We went on a Sunday when most things were closed, so I recommend you do a tour Tuesday through Saturday. Nevertheless, we loved this tour.
