Amazing access to friendly animals, great staff and cafe - We’ve been to many many zoos around the world, and this one was number one in having friendly and accessible animals in a lush rain forest setting! All sorts of beautiful plumage birds came up to us, roosted on us, picked at our lunch. 😝. You can walk in the middle of hopping wallabies and (for a small fee) hold a koala, python, and baby crocodile (even ok for kids). Food at the cafe was excellent, and reasonably priced; we enjoyed the fresh from the oven chicken and mushroom pasty, curried egg salad sandwich, and multi ingredient pasta salad. Staff were incredibly friendly and nice; after I bought a ticket to have my photo taken holding a koala and changed my mind (so as not to stress it out), the staffer credited my unused ticket to my gift shop purchase without my even asking. A really fun way to spend a couple hours. Both kid and adult friendly, and all well protected from the heat and rain. Strongly recommend!

Great facility and unique experience - We really enjoyed the wildlife habitat. The areas for the animals seemed well designed and provided a good amount of space for the animals, so there wasn't a zoo feel to the place. The kangaroos were amazing and definitely didn't shy away from being fed or having their chins scratched. The birds in the Cafe area were super friendly and also enjoyed getting scratches and cuddling on your shoulder. The croc feeding was very educational and was fun to see them and learn more about them. There were some rogue pelicans that apparently drop into the exhibit regularly, be careful around them, they aren't friendly and chased us and snapped at us when we tried to get around them. I didn't realize a pelican bill was sharp, but apparently it is. We just tried to walk around them and they got aggressive , so if you see them there stay clear. The staff was all very friendly, the facilities were well maintained and the animals seemed happy in their environment. Definitely worth the time to visit. And get some food for the kangaroos in the gift shop before heading in. They're very food driven and you'll have a much more interesting experience if you have treats.

Get up and close with Animals - This is one of the coolest wildlife habitats ever. We did the breakfast with the birds so got to hold a bunch of birds including a gay parrot! The wildlife habitat allows you to get up and close with a lot of different animals and apparently is the only place in New Zealand where you can hold a Koala (learned this on a tour in Sydney). Highly recommend.

Compact zoo with lots of different species - Small zoo but full of wildlife and very interesting. The tearoom has resident cockatoos who try to extort food out of you despite warnings not to do so. Can't these birds read? Some of the most beautiful pink cockatoos I've ever seen are here.

Unexpected Gem - Unexpected gem. Our first day in Port Douglas after a long travel from the US we wanted to be mellow and see some animals. We booked a private zookeeper tour and that was so worth the extra $. We had Ella give us a great tour. Got up close in the private koala viewing area. She had the perfect food to feed the kangaroos, and really brought the place to life with her stories.

One of the few places you can hold a koala. - I went to Australia to hold a koala and while the experience was very quick (seconds) it made me happy. I also became a kangaroo lover. The kangaroo section allows you to walk around and interact with the kangaroos, feeding them and petting them. We skipped the birds and reptiles but for us it was still worth the visit.
