Discovering the Mystical Furnas with My Family

Our adventure began with a scenic drive from Ponta Delgada to the enchanting village of Furnas. As we journeyed along the coastline, the kids were captivated by the stunning views of the Vila Franca do Campo islet. The anticipation built as we approached the Lagoa das Furnas, a breathtaking lagoon nestled within a dormant volcano. The sight of the lush greenery and the diverse flora and fauna was a treat for the eyes and a perfect opportunity for the kids to learn about the unique ecosystem of the Azores.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by our knowledgeable guide, whose enthusiasm was infectious. He shared fascinating tales of the region’s history and traditions, keeping both the adults and children engaged. The highlight for the kids was undoubtedly the sight of the hot springs ground stoves scattered throughout the park. They were amazed to learn how the locals use the geothermal heat to cook the traditional “Cozido das Furnas,” a delicious stew that we would later savor.

A Feast for the Senses

As the sun began to set, we made our way to a local restaurant to indulge in the famous “Cozido das Furnas.” The meal was a delightful experience, with a variety of meats, vegetables, and tubers cooked to perfection underground. The kids were thrilled to have their own special dishes, and the vegetarian option was a hit with my eldest. The meal was accompanied by red wine for the adults and refreshing green tea for the little ones.

After dinner, we headed to the Poca da Dona Beija hot springs. The warm, mineral-rich waters were a soothing balm for our travel-weary bodies. The kids loved splashing around in the pools, surrounded by lush vegetation and the soothing sounds of nature. It was a moment of pure relaxation and a chance to unwind as a family.

Nighttime Wonders and Sweet Endings

As night fell, we embarked on a short walk through the Alameda Garden, where we marveled at the hidden aquarium and the human-made waterfall. The kids were delighted to spot some bunnies and even got to pet a few friendly kitties along the way.

Our guide then led us to the Caldeira das Furnas, where we witnessed the mesmerizing sight of steam rising from the ground. The kids were fascinated by the warm earth beneath their feet and the stories of locals cooking corn on the steam. It was a magical experience, enhanced by the guide’s captivating tales of Christmas decorations adorning the steam section.

To end the night on a sweet note, we were treated to homemade baked bean muffins, a delightful surprise that the kids devoured with glee. As we made our way back to Ponta Delgada, the kids were already planning our next visit to this mystical place. The Furnas Adventure was an unforgettable experience that combined education, relaxation, and family fun in the most enchanting way.
