Highlights
  • Pompeii Archaeological Park - The city of Pompeii is famous because it was destroyed in 79 CE when a nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius , erupted, covering it in at least 19 feet (6 metres) of ash and other volcanic debris. The city’s quick burial preserved it for centuries before its ruins were discovered in the late 16th century. The subsequent excavation of Pompeii and the surrounding areas in the mid-18th century marked the start of the modern science of archaeology . The archaeological sites at and around Pompeii are important because they provide a unique source of information about many aspects of social, economic, religious, and political life of the ancient world.

The volcano, with its symmetrically central cone and steeply wooded hillsides, is housed within the stunning and prosperous Mount Vesuvius National Park. This park, sprinkled with quaint farms and vineyards growing antique variants, offers a captivating and singular terroir. Every year, countless tourists undertake the must-do journey to the crater’s edge to observe its intriguing depths. The historical remains of Pompeii stretch over a massive 440,000 square meters. Fully exploring this substantial area, which was once a flourishing city complete with squares, temples, baths, civic buildings, private residences, and stores, would require a minimum of three days. Great experience - Paolo was terrific! He made suggestions to make the most of our time. He picked us up at the cruise ship and we had no trouble finding him. Would highly recommend.
