From Peaks to Plates: A Himalayan Adventure in Pokhara
In search of a unique adventure, I traded my usual adrenaline-fueled escapades for a Nepalese cooking class in Pokhara. Join me as I recount the breathtaking Ghorepani–Ghandruk Trek and the delightful experience of crafting authentic momos.
The Call of the Himalayas
As a former professional athlete turned travel writer, I’m always on the hunt for the next adrenaline rush. But this time, I decided to swap my usual high-octane adventures for something a little different—a Nepalese cooking class in Pokhara. My fiancée and I were in the region for the Ghorepani–Ghandruk Trek, a short yet stunning journey through the Annapurna region. The trek promised breathtaking mountain views, vibrant rhododendron forests, and a deep dive into the local Gurung culture. It was the perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion.
Our trek began with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapool, where we embarked on a scenic uphill journey through villages and terraced fields to Ulleri. The elevation was a manageable 2,050 meters, and the 5-6 hours of walking each day were filled with awe-inspiring vistas and the warm hospitality of the locals. Our guide, Bishnu Giri, and porter, Ram Giri, were invaluable, ensuring our journey was smooth and stress-free.
Sunrise Magic at Poon Hill
The highlight of our trek was undoubtedly the early morning hike to Poon Hill. Rising at 3,210 meters, this vantage point offered a sunrise spectacle over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges that was nothing short of magical. As the first rays of sunlight kissed the snow-capped peaks, I felt a sense of peace and wonder that rivaled even my most thrilling adventures.
The trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani took us through enchanting rhododendron forests and peaceful trails. The vibrant colors and serene atmosphere made every step a joy. Despite the occasional challenging stone steps, the journey was rewarding and manageable, even for beginners. The panoramic views from Poon Hill were a testament to the beauty of the Himalayas, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such a spectacle.
Cultural Immersion in Ghandruk
After the sunrise marvel at Poon Hill, we continued our trek to Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung village. Walking through the village, we were greeted by the warm smiles of the locals and the rich cultural tapestry that defines this region. The Gurung people welcomed us with open arms, sharing their traditions and stories that added depth to our adventure.
The descent through Gurung villages and farmland to Nayapool was a gentle reminder of the simplicity and beauty of life in the Himalayas. As we made our way back to Pokhara, I reflected on the journey and the unforgettable moments we had experienced. The Ghorepani–Ghandruk Trek was a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty—a testament to the wonders of Nepal.
And as for the Nepalese cooking class? It was the cherry on top of an already incredible adventure. Crafting authentic momos with the guidance of local chefs was a delightful experience that added a flavorful twist to our Himalayan journey. If you’re ever in Pokhara, I highly recommend Crafting Momos for a taste of Nepalese culture and cuisine.
