Setting Sail from Playa San Juan

The anticipation was palpable as I boarded the boat at Playa San Juan, ready to embark on a marine life observation tour that promised encounters with whales and dolphins. As a marine biologist, the ocean has always been my sanctuary, and the prospect of witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was exhilarating. Our captain, Javier, greeted us warmly, and with a small group of nine, we set off towards the Whale Sanctuary.

After our swim, we set off once more in search of whales. Javier’s expertise paid off as we soon found ourselves in the company of pilot whales. These magnificent creatures, measuring between 5 to 7 meters, were a sight to behold. They had just finished hunting giant calamari, and their graceful movements were mesmerizing. Our small boat was allowed to accompany them for a while, a privilege that left me in awe of their power and beauty. The experience was conducted with great respect for the whales, ensuring that our presence did not disturb their natural behavior.

A Memorable Return

As we made our way back to Playa San Juan, the atmosphere on the boat was one of camaraderie and shared wonder. The conversation flowed easily among our multinational group, each of us sharing our impressions of the day’s adventures.

Back at the port, Javier and Francesca provided a final touch of hospitality, offering insights into the marine life we had encountered and the importance of conservation efforts. As I disembarked, I felt a renewed sense of purpose in my work as a marine biologist. This excursion had not only been a thrilling adventure but also a reminder of the beauty and fragility of the ocean’s ecosystems.
