Whales and Wonders: A Marine Adventure in Tenerife

Drawn by the allure of Tenerife’s marine life, I embarked on a journey from Playa San Juan to witness whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. Join me as I recount an unforgettable adventure filled with breathtaking encounters and serene moments.

Setting Sail from Playa San Juan

The anticipation was palpable as I boarded the boat at Playa San Juan, ready to embark on a marine life observation tour that promised encounters with whales and dolphins. As a marine biologist, the ocean has always been my sanctuary, and the prospect of witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was exhilarating. Our captain, Javier, greeted us warmly, and with a small group of nine, we set off towards the Whale Sanctuary.

The ocean breeze was refreshing, and the sun cast a golden glow on the water as we cruised towards the cliffs of Los Gigantes. The towering rock formations, rising 600 meters above the sea, were a breathtaking sight. Javier, with his extensive knowledge of the area, shared insights into the volcanic origins of the cliffs, adding a layer of intrigue to the stunning scenery. As we sailed, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of calm and excitement, knowing that we were about to encounter some of the ocean’s most majestic inhabitants.

A Close Encounter with Whales

Our journey took an unexpected turn when we learned that whales had not yet been spotted by other boats. Javier, ever the skilled captain, decided to take us to the cove of Masca first. Here, we had the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear waters, a refreshing interlude that allowed us to fully appreciate the natural beauty of Tenerife. The cove was serene, and as I floated in the water, I felt a deep connection to the marine world I have dedicated my life to studying.

After our swim, we set off once more in search of whales. Javier’s expertise paid off as we soon found ourselves in the company of pilot whales. These magnificent creatures, measuring between 5 to 7 meters, were a sight to behold. They had just finished hunting giant calamari, and their graceful movements were mesmerizing. Our small boat was allowed to accompany them for a while, a privilege that left me in awe of their power and beauty. The experience was conducted with great respect for the whales, ensuring that our presence did not disturb their natural behavior.

A Memorable Return

As we made our way back to Playa San Juan, the atmosphere on the boat was one of camaraderie and shared wonder. Francesca, who had been a friendly presence throughout the tour, ensured that we were well taken care of with homemade sandwiches and a selection of drinks. The conversation flowed easily among our multinational group, each of us sharing our impressions of the day’s adventures.

Back at the port, Javier and Francesca provided a final touch of hospitality, offering insights into the marine life we had encountered and the importance of conservation efforts. As I disembarked, I felt a renewed sense of purpose in my work as a marine biologist. This excursion had not only been a thrilling adventure but also a reminder of the beauty and fragility of the ocean’s ecosystems.

For those considering a similar experience, I recommend taking precautions against seasickness and bringing sun protection, even in the cooler months. The occasional spray of seawater and the gentle swell of the ocean only added to the authenticity of the experience, making it a truly unforgettable journey. Many thanks to Javier and Francesca for their warmth and expertise, which made this excursion a highlight of my travels.
