Surfing the Border: A Day Trip to Nicaragua’s Hidden Gems
When the opportunity to explore Nicaragua from Costa Rica presented itself, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with breathtaking views, vibrant markets, and unforgettable encounters with nature.
Crossing the Border with Ease
The day began before the sun had even thought about rising. At 5 am, I was picked up from my hotel in Playa Flamingo, ready to embark on a journey that promised to be as thrilling as catching the perfect wave. The air-conditioned minivan was a welcome comfort, and our guide was a beacon of knowledge and friendliness. As someone who’s spent countless hours navigating the tides, it was refreshing to have someone else take the helm for a change.
Crossing the border into Nicaragua was a breeze, thanks to our guide’s expertise. The process was seamless, and before I knew it, we were on our way to a hearty breakfast. The anticipation of the day’s adventures was as palpable as the salty ocean breeze I love so much.
Exploring Nicaragua’s Natural Wonders
Our first stop was the Mirador de Catarina, a viewpoint that offered a breathtaking panorama of the dormant volcano, Granada, and Lake Nicaragua. Standing there, I felt a sense of awe that rivaled the feeling of riding a massive wave. The landscape was a testament to nature’s raw beauty, and I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness it.
Next, we ventured to the Masaya Handicraft Market, where the vibrant colors and lively atmosphere reminded me of the bustling surf towns I’ve visited throughout Central America. I picked up a few souvenirs, each one a tangible memory of this incredible day.
The Museo del Parque Volcan De Masaya was another highlight. Standing next to the crater of an inactive volcano, listening to it rumble and spew gases, was an experience unlike any other. It was a reminder of the earth’s power, much like the ocean’s mighty waves.
A Sunset to Remember
As the day began to wind down, we made our way to the Isletas de Granada for a boat ride on Lake Nicaragua. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the water, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the sunsets I’ve watched from my surfboard.
Our guide took us to Monkey Island, where playful monkeys greeted us, adding a touch of whimsy to the serene setting. It was the perfect way to end the day, surrounded by nature and the gentle lapping of the lake’s waves.
Returning to Costa Rica, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The day’s adventures had been a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation, much like the lifestyle I cherish as a nomadic surfer. If you’re ever in Playa Flamingo, I highly recommend taking the Nicaragua Highlights Tour for a day of unforgettable experiences.
