Playa del Carmen

Rio Secreto holds the record for being the longest partially submerged cave in the Yucatan Peninsula. We own a sprawling 90 hectares of area, but thanks to our preservation efforts, only 10% of this is utilized for tourist activities. Great experience at the caves - We had a fantastic time at Rio Secreto today. The caves were beautiful. There was wheelchair access via a steep slope into the cave, and our guides Pepe and Dany were very helpful in guiding us down. They were also very knowledgeable about the caves and made our experience extremely enjoyable.

Amazing Cenote Adventure - Not disappointed at all! Read the reviews, so we knew to book the earliest tour available, 10:00am. We arrived (via other transportation, not part of tour) at Rio Secreto Playa del Carmen around 9:30am. Since we prepaid online, check-in was a breeze. From the check-in area, we boarded a van that drove 10+ minutes to the staging area where we rinsed off, were fitted for wetsuits (highly recommended), close-toe water shoes, placed our stuff into single lockers, and we headed off for a short hike/ walk. There is a short Mayan blessing (cultural, not religious) and we entered the underground river system. You are not allowed to take your own pictures and I suspect the reason is two- fold: they don't want people wondering off- course to take pictures and they make money selling pictures. We purchased pictures because they are professional and it was beautiful. There were 8 people in our group so they added one other couple to our tour (you can pay to have a private tour if you desire that). The guide, Imelda, really loves what she is doing. She was informative, enthusiastic and made sure we were taken care of from beginning to end. I recommend taking the walking stick that is offered, as the river walk is not a smooth path. The water was cold, I heard 75 degrees F, but thanks to the half wetsuit, I wasn't cold at all (that was my biggest worry prior to booking: will I be so cold I won't enjoy it). Pictures and words can't describe the beauty and feeling. After the walk/ swim/ float, we went to the building where we had lunch and were able to purchase the professional pictures and/ or stuff from the gift shop. Lunch was good (included), as expected, not spectacular. It took us over 4 hours from arrival to departure, so plan accordingly. I think later in the day it would take even longer. Everyone in our group raved about the day, not one complaint to be had. Imelda made it the best.

Definitely recommend - We had a great time. Perfect amount of time and a very unique experience that everyone in our family enjoyed. We stayed in Playa del Carmen and transportation was simple and Rio Secreto was nearby. Our tour guide was great and provided a good balance of information, history and humor.

Wonderful experience - We visited Rio Secreto as a family for the first time, it is a wonderful place. I highly recommend it. Being able to see stalactites formed over millions of years and taking the tour inside the cavern was something spectacular. Our guide Tainara was always super friendly and gave us a lot of information.

Ship At Port in Cozumel, Self Arranged Tour - Fantastic Rio Secreto - Two couples aboard NCL Ship at Cozumel Port for 9 hours. NCL would not run tours to Rio Secreto (not enough time they said), so we took matters into our own hands and self booked this excursion. Loved every minute. In port at 8 am, on Ferry to Playa Del Carmen at 9 am. Taxi to Rio Secreto with plenty of time for 11 am tour. The tour was guided by Benito. This guide is highly respected by many of the other guides and employees at the cave, who demonstrated much respect and honor to Benito. We found out why; he is knowledgeable (he is a passionate spelunker with decades of experience), expressive with his explanations, multi-lingual, but most of all he is attentive, caring and responsive to the needs of those in his care, us, his clients. Benito understood our time concerns and assured us that we would enjoy the whole tour and be ready in time to go back to the ferry, then he arranged personalized transport with one of the cave operator's drivers to instead take us to the ferry in Playa Del Carmen. Gracias Benito, excellent service. The cave was amazing, I have been to many caves all over Canada and the US. I have never seen such a density of structures in any of them that I saw on this day. So many stalactites, and columns. The lighting in the cave is all from the headlamps of the people in the caves, and gives a unique ambiance and ethereal quality. The real sensory addition was that you were in water which makes the experience lively and immersive (I just couldn't help but use that descriptor). The water adds a layer of interest as the movement of water constantly reflects and refracts the lighting which gives a lively visual experience. The cave tour feels authentic and genuine, many times I've taken cave tours where you take an elevator down into the depths. Never have I walked down natural terrain from ground level right into the cave and experienced the transition from daylight to, head lamps on, into the depth and darkness of the cave in a few moments, very cool. After the tour the wet suits come off, we had a quick bit to eat, viewed photos that were taken of us. Then the personal trip back to the ferry for the 3 pm ride back to Cozumel. By the way, the ferry services provided live musicians for rides in both directions, bravo Ultamar and Winjet. We were back on board the ship with over an hour before departure. For those on cruise ships, if your ship offers tours to Rio Secreto you will greatly enjoy this unique cave tour experience. If your ship doesn't offer tours, trust your instincts and self arrange the Rio Secreto, it's beautiful and well worth the adventure.

Photos are too expensive - It was an amazing tour- the natural wonder of this creation was awe inspiring. I did not enjoy the Mayan ritual even though they claimed it was not “religious” I felt very uncomfortable. It was a huge disappointment was that you cannot take your own photos. They do offer pictures taken by their staff at the end of the tour but they were unreasonably priced.
