An enlightening adventure - One of the best adventures I had in Playa del Carmen. A shuttle picked us up from our resort and brought us to the buggies. Carlos and Abraham had great humor and spoke English. We drove in a single file line of at least six buggies on a dusty concrete road (no off road). Mostly flat roads, but there were some fun parts where you went up and down hilly roads. The goggles and cloths kept most of the dust out of our eyes. Sometimes we had to stop for those in back to catch up, but no bother. We stopped at a cenote — like a cave with a salt water pool. Numerous locals were there either swimming or hanging out in the trees. The water was a bit chilly but refreshing. Carlos and Abraham were easy to talk to here to learn about their business and life. They ended this part of the tour with a prayer of sorts, thanking the Mayan gods. We closed our eyes as they used their hands and conch shells to create various mystical sounds. It was very peaceful. Next we went to the “Mayan village.” It is really a long road of single floor homes, some just made of concrete blocks while others were more permanent. Clearly not a wealthy area. Children ran out to the buggies as we drove through, smiling and speaking Spanish. We drive under two power lines that stretch down the road. We were told the government allows people — half Mayan heritage and half migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, etc. — to settle the area and build their houses either as temporary shelters on their migrant journey or to stay for longer. We ate delicious empanadas and drank squeezed watermelon juice (water is not safe in Mexico) at a quaint restaurant here. Very refreshing. Some guests bought the children candy, and we did too. Apparently they wanted to charge us double the normal price, but an employee protested that they shouldn’t cheat tourists. Children gave us flowers too. There’s surely a desire to get the empathy and money of tourists, but done in a sweet way. This trip was a enlightening contrast with the luxury of resort life, which is not real Mexico. If you’re worried about bringing young children, there are larger buggies with a backseat that we used to hold the three-year-old with us. The buggies were fun, but the real treat was an “off the beaten path” experience of contemporary Mayan culture and reality.

Must do in Playa del Carmen!! - We had a great time on the buggy trip! Abraham and Carlos were funny and informative. A great way to spend the morning/afternoon! Visiting the village and learning about them really made the tour stand out from others we’ve done like this. The village was welcoming and the children running out of their houses to wave hello and goodbye as we drove through put a smile on everyone’s face. The cenote was so refreshing and the ceremony to thank the Mayan gods was a beautiful moment of calm before we drove away. We definitely recommend this trip!

GREAT DAY! - It was a great adventure, something different to do, we went with our girls, a 15 and 9 year old, and they had a blast, the buggy they loved and the cenote as well, it was all a great activity, so nice to have the experience to eat something made by the locals in their home, very tasty and a different and nice experience overall.

More satisfying than just a ride! - ATV ride was awesome, but my favorite part was visiting the small village and learning little bit about their living environment, meeting all the families, it breaks my heart seeing little kids and dogs go without so many things that we take for granted days in and days out. I love that we had the opportunity to help the village by donating few dollars to buy goods for the families. Last but not least, cenote was peaceful and beautiful ❤️.

Fun Activity - Very fun! Can't wait to bring our kids when they are older. Time spent at the Mayan Village was a bit long in my opinion as there was not much to do when done eating. Would have enjoyed more time in the buggy or cenote rather than waiting. Guides were very nice and funny!
