Exploring Tulum’s Ancient Ruins and Swimming with Turtles in Akumal
Drawn by the allure of ancient ruins and the promise of swimming with sea turtles, I embarked on a journey to Tulum and beyond. Join me as I explore the rich history, refreshing cenotes, and the magical underwater world of Akumal.
Ancient Echoes at Tulum
The day began with a gentle breeze and the promise of adventure as we set off to explore the Tulum Ruins. Perched on a cliff overlooking the mesmerizing turquoise waters of the Caribbean, the ancient city of Tulum is a sight to behold. Our guide, Ivan, was a fountain of knowledge, weaving tales of the Mayan civilization that once thrived here. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the ocean, and standing there, with the waves crashing below, I could almost hear the whispers of the past carried by the sea breeze.
While the guided tour was enlightening, I found myself yearning for a bit more time to wander and soak in the history at my own pace. The sun was relentless, and I was grateful for my rash guard and hat, a must-have for anyone planning to visit. The ruins, though exposed to the elements, offered a unique glimpse into a world long gone, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the resilience of the structures that have withstood the test of time.
A Refreshing Dive into the Cenote
After the heat of the ruins, the cool embrace of the Cenote Nohoch Nah Chich was a welcome relief. Nestled in the jungle, this natural limestone sinkhole was a hidden oasis, its crystal-clear waters inviting us to dive in and explore. Half of our group declared this their favorite part of the trip, and it’s easy to see why. The water was invigorating, a refreshing contrast to the morning’s heat, and as I floated on my back, I felt a profound sense of peace.
Snorkeling in the cenote was an experience like no other. The mineral-rich waters were teeming with life, and the play of light on the cave walls created a magical atmosphere. Whether you bring your own snorkel gear or use the provided masks, the underwater world is a sight to behold. After our swim, we were treated to a delicious buffet lunch, a perfect way to refuel before our next adventure. The locals offered photos for purchase, capturing the memories of our time in this enchanting place.
Swimming with Turtles at Akumal
Our final stop was Akumal Beach, a serene bay known for its resident sea turtles. As someone who spends a lot of time in the water, the opportunity to swim alongside these gentle creatures was a dream come true. The turtles were the stars of the show, gracefully gliding through the water, and we were lucky enough to see over ten of them, along with stingrays and a variety of fish.
The experience was nothing short of magical. The turtles came so close, it felt like a dance, a silent communication between us and these ancient mariners. After our swim, we made use of the showers and changing rooms provided, feeling refreshed and exhilarated from our underwater adventure. This trip was a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure, and I can’t wait to return to explore more cenotes and swim with the turtles again. If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in the Riviera Maya, this tour is a must-do.
