S21 Prison Toul Sleng & Killing Field, Wat Phnom & Independence Monument
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Once a high school, Tuol Sleng was transformed by the Khmer Rouge into a center for interrogation, torture, and death. Today, it stands as a museum of torture, reminding visitors of the horrific events that occurred in Cambodia. Approximately 17,000 individuals passed through this prison, with only seven surviving. While not everyone may wish to visit, it is crucial for understanding the depths of Cambodia’s past and the progress made since.
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Prisoners from Tuol Sleng were taken along this route to their fate. Formerly a Chinese cemetery, Choeung Ek was converted into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8,985 individuals were exhumed from mass graves and are preserved in a memorial stupa here. Despite its tragic history, it is a serene place for reflection on the events that affected Cambodia and its people.
Independence Monument - Constructed in 1958 and inaugurated in 1962 during the Sangkum Reastr regime, the Independence Monument stands as a proud tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s welfare. Its cool, tranquil atmosphere makes it a popular destination.
Wat Phnom Daun Penh - The Wat Phnom Temple, founded by Daun Penh (Grandma Penh), a wealthy widow, dates back to 1372. She discovered a log with five Buddha statues in a river and decided to elevate a piece of her land to build a temple for them. Eventually, a temple was constructed on the hilltop, housing four Buddha statues, while a standing statue of the goddess was placed in a shrine on the eastern side of the hill. This site became a sacred place for blessings and prayers.
Tamao Mountain Zoo & Central Market Phnom Penh
Central Market - Visit the impressive Central Market, a city landmark. Completed by the French in 1937, this remarkable structure, known as Psar Thmei or New Market, features a well-ventilated dome. The market offers a wide array of goods available in Cambodia. Shoppers should be cautious, as the market is known for overcharging, or “shaving your head,” as locals say.
Tamao Mountain - Located 40 km from Phnom Penh City, Tamao Mountain is a large zoo in Cambodia. Spanning 25,000 hectares, it is a protected forest area, with 70 hectares dedicated to ancient temples. Tamao Temple, built in the 11th century, is dedicated to Brahmanism. The zoo is home to 84 species of animals and birds, brought here by the Ministry of Agriculture and rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking across Cambodia.
