Highlights
  • Phnom Penh - Nowadays Phnom Penh is a vibrant and bustling capital city with around 2,000,000 residents with motorbikes and cars and a culture of sidewalk cafes established in recent years.

The capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia is located at the confluence of three rivers: The Mekong, the Bassac, and the Tonle Sap. Once considered the loveliest city of Indochina, the city still maintains considerable charm. There is plenty to see in this small colonial capital. The many sidewalk cafes, established along the riverfront, invite the visitor for a rest. In addition to such tourist sites as the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, and Wat Phnom, there are several markets selling silk, silver, gems, and antiques. Also worthwhile is a visit to the notorious “Killing Fields” and Tuol Sleng Museum, which chronicle the unfortunate years under the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge.

Day tour that provides access to key part of the city - Great day tour with Sam Ang. We covered all key parts of the town in comfortable van and the tour was paced well. Sam is extremely knowledgeable guide who has previously worked as a teacher in the local international school. He also provided the unique insight to local history and the political situation of the times gone. Highly recommend. Only downside was that the royal palace was shut at short notice on the day! 😳

Great Day Tour packed with most important highlights - We were picked up in time and had a nice big airconditioned car with tour guide Sam and driver. it was very nice to be able to just jump into the waiting cool car after being out in the heat. we booked this tour as we wanted to see as much as possible in a day and we did. all mentioned stops were done and we had enough time inside. lunch place was nice (on own expense). cold water was offered throughout the tour. so in total a great experience we totally recommend.

Excellent Private Tour of Phnom Penh with Knowledgeable Local Guide with Focus on History and Culture - We were very lucky to have our wonderful guide Mr. Channak Sok to introduce us to the history and culture of Phnom Penh. On this private 1 day tour Mr. Sok and his driver took us by air conditioned SUV to the major sites around the city including the S21 prison, Cheong Ek Genocide Memorial, National Museum, and Wat Phnom Daun Penh. (The Royal Palace was closed that day but we were offered a river cruise instead. ) Mr. Sok’s knowledge of Cambodia is extensive and his commitment to sharing the heartbreaks of its history and aspirations for its future was moving. Although it was difficult to visit the prison and killing fields, the respect and reverence shown by Mr. Sok impressed upon us the importance for visitors to learn about the atrocities and honor the victims. The gravity of that part of the tour was counterbalanced by a terrific lunch at a friendly local restaurant that never would have found ourselves. Afterwards we enjoyed a driving tour of the major sites in the city including the riverfront, independence monument, a visit to the National Museum and Wat Phnom Daun Penh. All along the way Mr. Sok and the driver took care of every detail (pickup at our hotel, admission tickets, refreshments, etc) so that we could focus on the experience instead of worrying about the logistics of getting around a new city. If you value a meaningful personalized experience during your visit to Phnom Penh we highly recommend this tour.

Confirm itinerary in advance - To start off with, both Viator & the local tour operator failed to advise us in advance that both Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda would be closed. This should have been made categorically clear so that we had an option of re-booking for an alternate date. Therefore, we were only able to cover parts of the itinerary that we had paid for with no refund offered either. Whilst the guide himself was generally knowledgeable & communicated reasonably, he did not accompany us inside the museums where we were left to read and decipher information ourselves. We tipped both the guide & driver, but the driver seemed to expect a lot more (ridiculous considering price of this private tour). Lastly, the guide advised us the food was included and then at the end of the trip advised it wasn’t. He then quoted a higher price for the lunch but thankfully we had calculated the actual cost so only reimbursed the correct amount. Felt like it was a way to swindle us off more money than what it cost.
