Experience the marvels of the Phnom Penh Sightseeing city tour, led by our expert guides.
The tour will commence at any location within Phnom Penh city.
Tour details are as follows:
- Silver Pagoda - First stop: Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, showcasing Cambodian architectural structures and the living art of the royal family.
The palace is a complex of buildings serving as the official royal residence of the Cambodian King. The full name in Khmer is Preah Barom Reacheaveang Chaktomuk Serey Mongkol. Cambodian monarchs have resided here since its construction in the 1860s.
The palace was built between 1866 and 1870 after King Norodom moved the royal capital from Oudong city.
Silver Pagoda, located south of the Royal Palace, is ideal for those interested in religion, particularly Buddhism. It holds significant cultural and religious importance in Cambodia and is a must-visit for travelers. The walking tour lasts 60 minutes.
- National Museum of Cambodia - Second stop: National Museum of Cambodia’s Phnom Penh art gallery, featuring a collection of art.
The museum houses the world’s finest collection of Khmer sculpture and culture, within a graceful terracotta structure of traditional design, built from 1917 to 1920.
The museum displays ancient sculptures, including shoulders and two arms of a massive bronze reclining Vishnu statue, recovered from the Western Mebon temple near Angkor Wat in 1936.
It also features an eight-armed Vishnu statue from the 6th century, found at Phnom Da, and Harihara, combining attributes of Shiva and Vishnu, from Prasat Andet, Kompong Thom Province. Striking statues of Shiva from the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries are also on display.
A statue of a seated Jayavarman VII (r 1181–1219), with his head slightly bowed in meditation (Angkor Thom, late 12th century), is also featured.
Most visitors start on the left and proceed in a clockwise, chronological direction. The visit lasts 90 minutes.
- Wat Phnom - Third stop: Wat Phnom, a sacred Buddhist temple and a gathering spot for New Year celebrations, located in the city.
Standing 27 meters high on a tree-covered knoll, Wat Phnom is the only hill and the highest point in town. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was built in 1372 to house four Buddha statues deposited by the Mekong River and discovered by Lady Penh or Duan Penh, the grandmother. Hence the city name Phnom Penh or ‘hill of Penh’: 45 minutes.
- Independence Monument - Fourth stop: Independence Monument. On the way to a restaurant for a delightful lunch, there will be an opportunity to view the monument.
The Independence Monument was erected to commemorate the country’s liberation from French rule, which lasted nearly a century from 1863 to 1953.
Built in 1958 and inaugurated in 1962 during the Sangkum Reastr regime, led by King Sihanouk.
- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Fifth stop: Tuol Sleng.
After a lunch break of about 1 hour, the tour proceeds to Tuol Sleng prison to learn about the brutal regime that controlled Cambodia from April 17, 1975, to January 7, 1979. The regime, led by the Communist party, turned into a dictatorship, causing immense suffering to Cambodians. The visit lasts 90 minutes.
- Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Sixth stop: Killing Field. Between 1975 and 1978, approximately 20,000 men, women, children, and infants detained and tortured at S-21 prison were transported to the extermination camp of Choeung Ek. Today, it is a peaceful place where visitors can learn about the horrors that occurred here decades ago. The visit lasts 1 hour.
- Russian Market - Seventh stop: Russian Market, known in Cambodia as Phsar Toul Tom Pong. This name originated in the 1980s when Russians came to work and live in Phnom Penh and preferred shopping at this market, hence the name Russian Market. It offers a wide range of items, including street food, clothes, cosmetics, souvenirs, and motorcycle parts, especially Psar Tuol Tom Poung, a type of clothing produced by locals. Duration: 60 minutes.
