Eager to immerse myself in Thai culture, I joined a Riverside Thai Cooking Class in Phang-nga. The experience promised a hands-on journey into traditional Thai cuisine, and I couldn’t wait to share my culinary adventure.

A Warm Welcome and a Market Adventure

Arriving in Phang-nga, I was eager to dive into the local culture and cuisine. The Riverside Thai Cooking Class was the perfect opportunity to do just that. Apple, our host, picked us up from our guest house, and I was introduced to a lovely couple who would be joining me for the morning session. The drive to the local market was filled with chatter and excitement as we anticipated the culinary journey ahead.

The market was a sensory delight, bustling with vibrant colors and enticing aromas. Apple guided us through the stalls, introducing us to the fresh ingredients that are the backbone of Thai cuisine. She shared tips on selecting the freshest produce and even encouraged us to purchase some ready-made pastes to take home. It was a fantastic way to start the day, and I felt like I was getting an insider’s look into the heart of Thai cooking.

Cooking Up a Storm at Apple’s Home Farm

After our market tour, we headed to Apple’s home farm, where her cooking school is nestled amidst lush greenery. The setting was serene, and I felt an immediate sense of calm as we prepared to embark on our culinary adventure. Each participant had pre-selected a dish from a list of about 20 recipes, and we were all eager to get started.

Apple’s approach to teaching was hands-on and engaging. She explained the plan for the morning, and we each took turns cooking our chosen dishes at the front of the group. With her guidance, I felt confident in my ability to recreate the dish at home. We also made savory and sweet spring rolls, which were a delightful addition to our meal.

The small group size, limited to eight participants, allowed for personalized attention and a chance to connect with fellow travelers. We shared stories and travel tips, adding to the camaraderie of the experience. By the end of the session, we had prepared seven different dishes to share, and I left feeling both full and inspired.

Bringing Thai Flavors Home

One of the highlights of the class was receiving detailed recipes via email, along with a few bonus ones. This thoughtful touch ensured that I could recreate the dishes at home, and I was excited to try them out for friends and family. The experience had not only enriched my culinary skills but also deepened my appreciation for Thai culture.

Back home, I visited my local Asian market, armed with the knowledge and confidence gained from the class. I was able to find fresh and dried ingredients, ready to bring a taste of Thailand to my kitchen. The Riverside Thai Cooking Class was more than just a cooking lesson; it was a memorable journey into the heart of Thai cuisine, and I can’t recommend it enough to fellow travelers seeking an authentic and enriching experience.
